Advantages: Keeps small children occupied

Annie – Fit for Viewing by Persons Generally Excruciating, is one word which comes to mind, when thinking of how to sum up Annie the Musical. Raucous, grating and harsh, could describe the songs. Contrived, implausible and sudsy, the plot. However, I’ve watched this DVD probably getting on for 100 times as it is a firm favourite with my daughter, who is 3, which just goes to prove that genetics don’t always work. I saw Annie the musical as a stage ...
...decides that a DVD of Annie the Musical will be an ideal present for my daughter – since I was such a fan myself! My instinct is to inwardly groan – although I can’t really remember the story at all, there is something about small red-haired American brats that does not call out to me “quality movie”. I remove the cellophane packaging with a heavy heart. There are two possible outcomes – either my daughter will love it, and we will watch it endlessly ...

An action-packed song and dance spectacular!

Advantages: Family viewing
Disadvantages: None - unless you hate cute singing kids

...(in brief) the plot: Annie lives in a grotty orphanage run by the drunken Miss Hannigan, and spends much of her time dreaming of the day when her parents - who left her there as a baby some ten years before - will return to claim her and take her home. One day, a short-tempered millionaire called Oliver Warbucks decides he wants an orphan to stay with him for a week, as a P.R. stunt. Annie is chosen. Her cheeky character causes him to become fond ...
...insists that she will find her real parents one day. Warbucks tries to help, but succeeds only in attracting crooks who want the reward money. Of course, it all ends with a happy-ever-after! The sheer energy put in by the actors - especially the children - makes this film fun to watch, although it is very old-fashioned and quite obviously derived from a stage musical. The songs come thick and fast, with just enough dialogue and action to link them ...

A touching True Story

Advantages: True Story, very gripping
Disadvantages: Requires a box of tissues.

A little while back I bought a box set of DVDs' containing twelve true stories. 'A place for Annie' is the first in the set. Mine was part of a collection but you can buy it as a single DVD from top places such as Amazon and Tesco for around £6 - £7. However the cheapest I have seen is £5.49 with free P&P from dotcomdvd. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The film was originally made for TV as a film drama in 1994, but has since been released on DVD. The films two main stars are Sissy Spacek (Carrie, Coal miners' daughter) and Mary Louise Parker (Fried Green Tomatoes). Both are probably better known for parts in TV series than big major blockbusters, although Sissy has been in a few films in the last year and is cast for one in production. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The film opens in the hospital where Susan (Sissy Spacek) works as a paediatric nurse. Her ...

Review of A Place For Annie (DVD)

The sun'll come out tomorrow....

Advantages: The songs
Disadvantages: corny in places

Annie is an orphan who tries to escape from the orphanage time and time again due to the horrid orphanage owner. One day Annie get's chosen to live with a millionaire 'Daddy Warbuck'. She is treated like a Princess but Annie has this dream of finding her mother and father so escapes from his home too. Daddy Warbucks decides to place a ad on the local radio for Annie's sake encouraging anyone who knows the whereabouts of her parents to come forward and in doing this they get a number of people pretending that she is there's. Will Annie find her real parents? If you aren't a fan of musicals then this one is definitely not for you. At every whip stick the cast burst into song and sing their little hearts out. I'm not really into musicals as such but the songs featured in the film are so well known that I can't help but sing along ...

Perhaps the best Woody Allen film of all time

Advantages: Woody Allen dialogue at its finest with universally brilliant performances
Disadvantages: If you don't like any other Woody Allen movie you won't like this one

being then don't worry yourself with buying this one. It must be noted, though, that the purity of vision Woody Allen employs with his films (he has never watched Annie Hall or any of his other films since he finished them) has resulted in this being a bare-bones DVD release, so it may be an idea to rent the film first, as I did, and there's a good chance you'll then decide it has to be a part of your permanent collection. ...
