On the streets of Philadelphia

Advantages: Excellent performances, story and sound track
Disadvantages: None

. He must have been pretty good as he won an Oscar for his performance. It is quite surprising that with such a challenging subject, Philadelphia managed to attract such big audiences. The success has been partly put down to director Jonathan Demme getting Bruce Springsteen to provide the title track for the film, which he felt would attract more people. Whether this is the reason, Springsteen's song "Streets of Philadelphia" really encapsulates the feeling of the film with some very moving lyrics. The main character of the film is Andrew Beckett, played by Tom Hanks (Saving Private Ryan), a successful lawyer who is being guided by his bosses at the law firm until they find out he is a Homosexual with AIDS. In the movie we see Beckett's health suffer as the effects of AIDS ravish his body. Too try and make his portrayal as realistic as ...

Living In Oblivion review

Advantages: Well acted, keeps you engaged throughout
Disadvantages: None

Living In Oblivion is a low budget independent film written and directed by Tom DiCillo and starring Steve Buscemi and Dermot Mulroney. Sure, these aren't A-list stars, but that lends itself to the story. If it was a film about the making of a film and you had George Clooney and Brad Pitt pretending to be small time actors you wouldn't believe it. That's why it was better to use less well known actors, it pulls you more into the story. The film takes place during one day on set of a low budget movie, and documents all the problems that the director, Nick (Buscemi), and everyone else can encounter, from equipment malfunctioning to office politics to actors forgetting their lines. It's almost like a documentary, it is very realistic and gives you the complete story as to what it's like trying to get a film made. There are a few ...

WHEN ALVY MET ANNIE

Advantages: Please see review
Disadvantages: Please see review

, the character is angst-ridden, confused (growing up in a family home situated under a roller-coaster didn't help), searching for love and finding it hard to attain. He meets, dates, marries, and lives with a series of women in the course of the film, which covers a number of years in Alvy's life. But now rather than portraying the inept loser, Allen plays the struggling intellectual, forever his own worst enemy, over-analysing everything, overprotective, overcautious. It is only when he meets Annie that he sees himself as someone worth being with. Annie [Diane Keaton] is about as opposite in personality as Alvy as possible. When he meets her, she's unaffected and vivacious if quirky [she throws around terms like "La-de-dah" and "neat" without the slightest heed for sophistication]. The contrast in backgrounds and interests between ...
