Anne of Green Gables, 1985, Run time 199mins
History
The Anne of Green Gables Trilogy is made up of three videos; Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Green Gables The Sequel, and Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story. This film is the first in the series called Anne of Green Gables.
The film is set at the turn of the century, Prince Edward Island and follows the life of Anne Shirley an orphan girl who is sent to live at Green Gables with Matthew and Marrila Cuthbert.
Lucy Maud Montgomery a Canadian writer is responsible for the novels on which the first two films are based. The first Anne novel was published in 1919 and she went on to write 8 more. Kevin Sullivan and Laurie Pearson wrote the third film.
The first two films are directed and produced by Kevin Sullivan; Kevin also produced the third and helped to write the screenplay for all three. Stenfan Scani directed the third film.
The Story
Matthew and Marrila Cuthbert are an elderly brother and sister both unmarried, they live alone together at Green Gables. Now that they are getting on in age they are both finding it hard work to run the farm and decide to send for an orphan boy to help them out.
When Matthew heads to the station to collect the child he finds that a mistake has been made and they have not been sent a boy but they
have been sent a young red haired girl by the name of Anne Shirley.
Anne has always been alone, an orphan she has been sent from home to home over the years without any love from anyone, and from the moment she sets eyes on Green Gables she hopes that this will now be a true home for her.
Matthew is also quite taken with Anne on first meeting but convincing Marilla is another matter entirely. Anne with an e as she likes to be known has a wild imagination and sometimes talks with out thinking and this often gets her in trouble, she also has a very quick temper that she hasn't quite learnt to control yet, it is this temper that gets her into all sorts of scrapes.
Marilla puts Anne on a trial; this is a testing time for Anne as she has to learn to control herself, she really wants to stay at Green Gables more than anything and she really does try her best to be good.
The Anne Girl
Anne Shirley is played by Megan Follows in all three films; Anne Shirley is a young orphan girl with a wild imagination and quick temper. She is sent to live a Green Gables and makes everyone fall in love with her. In this first film we watch Anne learning to control her temper, making friends for the first time, and over coming all the mishaps she gets into. Megan Follows gives an incredible performance as Anne, as Anne is growing up so is Megan and I think that is what makes her character so believable. Megan won two Gemini Awards for best actress in her role of Anne Shirley.
Kindred Sprits and Bosom Buddies
Along the way Anne meets some 'Kindred Sprits' and a 'Bosom Buddie' as she would say, these people she holds dear to her heart and they all help Anne to find her self.
Her closest Kindrid Spirt is Marrilla Cuthbert played by Colleen Dewhurst, Marrilla is a stubborn woman with strict views, at first she is unsure of Anne Shirley but soon she realises that this child is exactly what she needs to make her life complete. Marrilla is in the first two films. Colleen Dewhurst is fabulous actress and does herself proud with the character of Marrilla Cuthbert. Colleen Dewhurst died two days before receiving her fourth Emmy Award.
Another kindrid spirt is of course her dear Matthew Cuthbert played by Richard Farnsworth, Matthew Cuthbert lives with his sister Marrilla, when Anne arrive she opens his heart to the child and enjoys spoiling her. Matthew is a loving character and appears in the first film only. Richard Farnsworth gives a heart wrenching performance as Matthew, Richard was a stunt man for 40 years before becoming an actor, and he should have started earlier because he is great.
Marrlia's nosey neighbour Rachel Lynde and Anne do not hit it off at first but over time Anne manages to melt her heart and she finds a good, kind soul in Rachel after all. Rachel Lynde is played by Patricia Hamilton, Rachel has lived next door to Marrila and Matthew for years, and she finds the idea of them getting an orphan child to help them preposterous. She is a very nosey neighbour and is always sticking her nose in other people business and speaking her mind a little too freely. Patricia Hamilton is great at portraying Rachel Lynde and goes on to play the same character in the following Anne films.
Her bosom buddy Diana Barry is played by Schuyler Grant, Diana becomes Anne's bosom friend and they spend a lot of time together, she loves her friend's strange ways and finally starts to have fun and adventure of her own. Schuyler Grant plays the role of Diana in all three films and does sterling job, as well her role as Diana Schuyler Grant is also known for her role of Camille Hawkins in TV series All My Children.
A big influence in Anne's life is Miss Stacey her teacher played by the lovely Marilyn Lightstone, Miss Stacey comes to teach at Prince Edward Island and finds something special in Anne. She teaches her a great many lessons including 'Tomorrow is always a fresh start, with no mistakes in it'. Marilyn Lighstone also plays Miss Stacey in the second of the Anne films and has also appeared in many children's series including Dennis the Menace and Duck Tails.
Some of Anne's kindred Sprits are not so obvious like the very handsome Gilbert Blythe played by Jonathan Crombie; Gilbert starts of as Anne's enemy but over time the start to get to know each other as friends. Jonathan Crombie is a fine actor and was nominated for Dora Award for Outstanding Performance in production of "Arcadia", 1996.
My Thoughts
You may remember this from when it was shown as separate episodes on the TV that was when I first watched it. I love this film so much, it is full of innocence and adventure, I love Anne's character she is so lovable with her funny ways and overactive imagination. It is a sweet story of a young girl finding herself and growing up. Megan Follows who plays Anne Shirley is a fabulous actress it is hard to believe she really isn't Anne, I also think that Colleen Dewhurst is fantastic as Marrila Cuthbert. The set and costumes are so detailed and beautiful; the scenery really helps to capture the beauty of the story and makes it easy to see why Anne was so desperate to belong to Green Gables and Prince Edwards Island. Jonathan Crombie who plays Gilbert Blithe is so handsome and charming I have to admit that when I first watched this movie I had a little crush (Ok I admit it I still do).
I really enjoy watching Anne getting into her scrapes, my favourites are:
The mouse in the pudding Getting Diana drunk on Red Currant Wine Walking the roof pole The Lady of Charlotte boat incident
I have watched all three films in the trilogy but I have to say I think that this is the best film by far.

Advantages: Superb casting; pitch-perfect turns by Follows, Dewhurst, Farnsworth; splendid adaptation of the first “Anne” book. Disadvantages: At 195 minutes of running time, it still leaves you wanting more.
