'Anna and The King' has just become available to rent and I decided to dedicate Sunday afternoon to watching it. The film stars Jodie Foster as an English teacher to the royal family of Siam (what was once Thailand). I was very impressed by Jodie Foster's English accent and really couldn't fault it. However I thought all performances in the film were brilliant and I'm ashamed to say I can't remember the actor who played the king. The film is set at the end of the 19th Century when the English Empire was extremely powerful and a driving force in the world. Anna is summoned to work for the King of Siam and to tutor his (58) children about English customs. Anna takes her son and forms a strong bond with the King and the whole royal family. Ok so it may not sound very exciting, but there is plenty of drama, tension and action I can assure you. The film also explores the often unforgiving Siam customs and the impending war with Burma. The film is beautifully shot and a pleasure to the eyes. If you have any interest in the far east it is definitely a must see and if you have a heart then get a box of tissues ready.
