For those of you who haven't quite seen the first season then I recommend you read my other review but if your in too much of a rush here is a quick reminder. The Vampire with a soul Angel, has left Sunnydale to set roots in LA, where he fights demons and monsters in his quest for atonement. He is helped on his mission by Cordelia who came to LA to become an actress and Wesley who was fired by the Watchers Council and became a rouge demon hunter.
This second instalment is where the series comes into it's own. It has separated itself from the Buffy series but still holds it's roots there with cross over characters and storylines. This is good because you can see the effects of these crossovers in each series which makes for interesting viewing. Anyway back to the review. The set contains all 22 episodes and some extras that are good but nothing spectacular. The episodes are:
Judgement Season Premiere: Angel grapples with the fact that he may not always be immortal, and Darla (Angel's sire) recovers from her restoration from Hell.
Are you Now or Have you Ever Been Angel directs Cordelia and Wesley to investigate a mysteriously abandoned hotel in Hollywood. But the building holds personal reverence for the vampire.
First Impressions When Cordelia has a particularly disturbing vision of Gunn in grave danger, she elects herself as his new protector.
Untouched Angel comes to the aid of a young woman, Bethany, who possesses telekinetic powers far beyond her control.
Dear Boy Angel's continued restless nights take him all the way back to 1860 London and his first
encounter with Drusilla, but when he sees Darla in his waking life, Cordelia , Wesley and Gunn fear he has gone off the deep end and may revert to his evil ways.
Guise Will be Guise Angel leaves town and Wesley takes on the role of a "vampire" to help a businessman protect his daughter.
Darla Angel is desperate to save his sire, Darla from the clutches of Wolfram and Hart. The episode is filled with flashbacks, of times from Darla's sireing by the Master to the live of Darla, Angelus, Spike and Drusilla in Medieval Europe.
The Shroud of Rahmon Angel poses as a flashy vampire hoodlum, and with the help of Gunn prevents a mind-altering shroud from falling into the wrong hands.
The Trial Angel is still haunted by flashbacks of his 150-year love affair with Darla and has Gunn help track her down, but he soon discovers that he is faced with an choice: watch her die from a terminal illness or use his dark powers to turn her back into a vampire and give her eternal life
Reunion Angel goes on a frantic search after Drusilla turns Darla back into a vampire, and he must catch them before she rises again and the two go back to their old ways and paint the city red with blood. Meanwhile, as Angel goes mad, Wesley and Cordelia worries they are the only ones standing between Angel and real darkness.
Redefinition After firing his staff and cutting himself off from all help, Angel begins intense physical and mental training to become strong enough to stop Darla and Drusilla before they destroy the City of Angels. Meanwhile, Cordelia, Wesley and Gunn try to continue the fight for the innocent on their own now that Angel's gone commando.
Blood Money Angel threatens to expose Wolfram & Hart's criminal activities when he discovers that they are stealing large contributions that were made to a teen shelter but an old adversary has other plans for Angel.
Happy Anniversary Angel and The Host must join forces to stop a brilliant, yet twisted physicist who is determined to stop time in order to keep his girlfriend from breaking up with him.
The Thin Dead Line Angel investigates rumors of renegade cops out for blood, while Cordelia, Wesley and Gunn carry out their own fact-finding mission that results Wesley being seriously wounded by a police gunshot.
Reprise (part 1) Angel learns of the impending visit of Wolfram & Hart's "senior partner," an evil and merciless demon from hell, and he plans a kamikaze mission to destroy the powerful beast that will sacrifice his own life in the process.
Epiphany (part 2) After an empty night of passion with Darla, Angel surprisingly wakes up with his soul still intact and has an epiphany. His moment of clarity brings him back to the land of the living and while he tries to reunite with his crew, but Cordelia, Wesley and Gunn aren't ready to forgive him, even when their very lives are at stake.
Disharmony Harmony appears in LA, and Cordelia thinks she's convinced her to act for good. But a cult of robed vampires convince Harmony that her destiny is with them.
Dead End A man who loses an eye has it miraculously replaced, and Lynsey's hand (severed in season 1 by Angel) is replaced. A body part transplanting demon is at work.
Belonging Angel and his crew must find a way to kill a bloodthirsty demon who has arrived in town from another dimension through a mysterious, magical portal in the karaoke bar. With the help of Cordelia's visions, they are able to locate someone who can help destroy the snarly beast; however, when it's time to return their source to his home dimension, Cordelia accidentally returns with him.
Over the Rainbow After being inadvertently sucked into a dimensional portal, Cordelia finds herself stuck in the Host's home world, Pylea, a place where human beings are treated as slaves. While Cordelia struggles to endure the hardships of otherworldly existence, her friends work on how to get her back. They decide that the only acceptable plan is to go to Pylea themselves, and the Host is none too excited about the idea of a homecoming.
Through the Looking Glass Angel and friends work overtime to survive in a foreign dimension. Cordelia discovers her dirty duty as Princess of Pylea is to mate with a creature called the Groosalugg. She's unable to escape the palace with Wesley and Gunn, and the priests keeping watch over her also prove to be less than trustworthy. Meanwhile, Angel gets himself into trouble with the Host's family when he refuses to kill a human woman who went missing from L.A. years before.
There's no place like Plrtz Grlb Season Finale. Angel tries to quell his inner beast; Cordelia learns that she must mate with a demon; Wesley and Gunn rise up against the throne.
The features are like this:
Disc One: Commentary for Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been: Good but I normally prefer watching the episode rather than listening about it.
Disc Two: Script For Darla: Interesting read, If you enjoy this kind of thing.
Disc Three: "Making Up The Monsters" Featurette: Great featurette which shows the make-up artists at work on some of the lead characters, and how the makeup is achieved. Stills Gallery: A usual display of pictures and still from the series. Set Blueprints "Inside the Agency" Featurette: How the concept and designs of the sets were come about. Very interesting.
Disc Five: Script for "Disharmony": Same as the script for Darla (except different episode of course)
Disc Six: Commentary for "Over The Rainbow" Season 2 Overview Featurette: Writers talk about what they enjoy about the series. Actors talk about how they feel about their characters. Very interesting. "Stunts" Featurette: How some of the stunts are done and co-ordinated. Season One DVD trailer: if you haven't seen it, a little teaser Cast Biographies : usual background stories for the main characters.
Now… With the disks and there contents out of the way we can talk about what they come in. As throughout both the Angel and Buffy series box set's, the disks are provided in a nice little book that looks great. The only disadvantage is that the book make's it hard to get the disks out. Apart from that the whole product is definitely worth the money to fork out for, which is around the £60-£70 mark depending on where you buy it. The book can be stored away in the protective cover box which slips over the book nicely. Both the book and box are made from a thick cardboard so is tough and durable for those late night fumblings.
So sit back and enjoy the night-time adventures of the Vampire with a soul.
