Things never go well when the Andromeda Ascendant takes on passengers. When Dylan agrees ... more
to transport the bride of an arranged wedding, "The Honey Offering" is tastes bad from the outset. Kimberly Huie gives a memorable acid-tongued performance as the lady in question. The real clue that things were doomed ought to have been Tyr's reservations over the two rival Nietzschean prides genuinely wanting to heal their breach."Star-Crossed" is the Series One episode that caused more gossip than any other. Stargate regular Michael Shanks guest stars, falls in love with Rommie on screen (and with Lexa Doig off screen), and then suddenly quits SG-1. There's certainly a spark between them in the show to support the gossip. The secondary cause for talk was its broadcast rescheduling in sympathy with the events of September 11 since it opens with a terrorist attack. As sci-fi show producers realise, they have an ongoing franchise on their hands, one of the contemporary issues to inevitably crop up is drug addiction. Here it's Beka who loses control of her addiction to a substance called Flash, and all she can see is that "It Makes a Lovely Light". Behind this surface narrative is a continued search for Dylan's long-lost home. The point ultimately becomes that he'd rather safeguard his crew than his memories.Criticised in some places for its extreme violence, the season finale "Its Hour Come 'Round at Last" will stay with you one way or another. Maybe for the sight of an alternate Rommie turning uncharacteristically nasty on every one and seriously kicking butt. Or maybe the mind-blowing Magog Worldship, made up of 20 planets and their sun. Or maybe just the seemingly impossible scenario each major character is faced with as the show ends. --Paul Tonks

recalling the best sci-fi of Roddenberry's heyday. Kevin (ex-Hercules) Sorbo, plays Captain Dylan Hunt, the sympathetically flawed idealist in command of the Andromeda Ascendant, a massive 1.4 KM long starship of the now-disbanded Systems Commonwealth. The fall of civilisation has meant that although she ought to be a relic she remains the zenith of technological advancement."The Pearls That Were His Eyes" was one of the first conceived episode ideas, but was delayed until the availability of aStar Trekregular. That eventually turned out to be John (Q) de Lancie, who gives a brilliant turn as Beka's long-lost Uncle Sid. She really ought to have learned by now that no one is out for completely altruistic goals. An indication of how rotten the galaxy has become is that it can now takes three years for junk mail to reach you!Finding another High Guard ship with a crew looking as it did 300 years ago seems like an awful big coincidence. In "The Mathematics of Tears" Dylan works to stay focused on the enigma at hand. Unfortunately, high-ranking officer Jill Pierce keeps distracting him with red herrings and all-manner of feminine wiles. Did they really stay young from the after-effects of an experimental weapon? Or is there a far more tragic secret to be revealed?--Paul Tonks

E10 - The Test.
This is a bit of a wierd episode as it is told from start to finish as normal, but the character interaction is dealt with by fade in / out as the story moves along. For example, Trance is at the bar and then dylan would fade in, interact and the fade out.
The episode basically tells the story of a Paradine who is 'murdered' and all the crew, apart from Doyle are accused of the murder. As the plot moves along and each crew member is accused and cross examined by 'the stranger' who came from the route of ages and landed, during the murder, they all start plan against each other if they are found guilty. At the start of the episode, the victim offers every one of them something to make them rich, therefore they are all planning on what to do with the money.
At the end of the episode it is found out that Dylan murdered the victim and that the whole thing is a test to get the crew to work together again and work as a team. The victim was essentially the stranger and he was sent by a future Dylan. Dylan also gets part of a device which will help him power the Andromeda back up.
On the whole a well executed episode, apart from the distractive way that the story is told.
E11 - Through The Glass, Darkly.
In my opinion, the best episode on the DVD set. The story revolved around the crew of the Andromeda trying to save a refugee camp from an evil tyrant who is trying to take over Seefra 5. With the crew trying to supply the refugee's with supplies and Rhade helping to defend the camp, Dylan needs a way to get the food and stuff to the colony through the Anti Aircraft blockade.
With the help of Hohne (A character who died 3 years ago and is brought forward to help him), Harper works on the defunct matter transporter to get the supplies through. This plan, however, creates a way for Dylan to stop the whole fall of the commonwealth as the matter transporter is still 'attached' to the last place it connected to, 300 years in the past.
With time running out in both timeframes, seeing as the transporter has caused the Seefra sun's to start to nova, Hohne sacrifices himeself to save the whole system but at the expense of the transporter. Because of the solar flares, the Anti Aircraft blockade is broken and the camp saved.
E12 - Pride Before The Fall.
An unknown stranger traps Beka on the Maru and has set a bomb to explode if she calls for help. Dylan has also found a way to fully power the Andromeda back up and therefore work on a way to exit the Seefra system. The stranger though has other plans as he wants the Andromeda for himself.
After investigation, it turns out that the Stranger is actually Drago Museveni and that the route of ages has brought him forward in time. Due to the special releationship he and Beka had, it turns out the Beka is the Matriarch of the Nietzschean race. Dylan finally get the Andromeda fully powered up.
This is a filler episode as it sets up many plot threads for the forthcoming episodes.
E13 - Moonlight Becomes You.
Again, another filler episode as Trance finally works out who she is. When trance visits Seefra 2, she meets a man who turns out to be the avatar of the Seefra Moon, with Trance being the Avatar of the Seefra sun.
With Harper, Doyle, Rhade and Beka searching for a Vedran treasure house, which turns out to be a test for protectors of avatars, the stage is set for the Seefra system to finally have the return of the hidden moon.
Extras.
The second DVD also contains the extra's for the boxset. As usual we have the deleted scenes and photo gallery. By far the best extra is the usual blopper reel.
Followers of the series will no doubt purchase this DVD and as usual it has the 12 certificate which has been the norm for most of the series. The whole set has a running time of about 2 hours and 44 minutes and a RRP of 19.99
Based on the writings of 'Star Trek' creator Gene Roddenberry, the sci-fi television series 'Andromeda' stars Kevin Sorbo (of 'Hercules' fame) as Dylan Hunt, captain of the sentient starship Andromeda Ascendant for the All-Systems Commonwealth, a galaxy-spanning near-utopian government. Ordered to the far end of a galaxy to rescue a star system from a rapidly approaching black hole, Hunt and his crew become frozen in time for 300 years until a passing ship awakens them. To their dismay, they find that the Commonwealth government has fallen apart and the various member galaxies now exist in utter chaos under a militant organisation known as the Nietzscheans. The series follows Hunt and the Andromeda crew as they cope with their new environment and attempt to restore order while fending off the hostile forces who wish to destroy them. This volume includes further episodes from the series' fifth and final season.
