believes women have a place in the newsroom - as long as they stick to covering fashion shows or late-breaking cooking stories. So when Ron is told he'll be working with a bright young newswoman (Christina Applegate) who's beautiful, ambitious and smart enough to be more than eye candy, it's not just a clash of two TV people with really great hair - it's war! Filled with wicked wit and slapstick humour, Anchorman is the year's most wildly irreverent, must-see comedy hit!

BURGUNDY, an entire film made up of footage and scenes that never made it into the first film. It's the early 1970s and the local anchorman is not only a source of news but a revered local hero. In San Diego, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), a moustachioed bachelor with a taste for scotch, unparalleled passion for the jazz flute, and a near-telepathic connection with his spirited mutt, Baxter, is that man. Rounding out Ron's testosterone-heavy news team are his close friends--cologne-obsessed man-on-the-street Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), sports reporter Champ Kind (Dave Koechner), and mentally challenged weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carrell). Their male camaraderie is challenged, though, when producer Ed Harken (Fred Willard), pressured by changing times, brings the first female reporter, ambitious Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), to the team. Ron finds his chauvinistic ideals compromised further when he starts falling in love with her. Fuelled by Ferrell's singularly loopy persona, ANCHORMAN joins the long list of comedies which have successfully poked fun at the styles and mores of the '70s. Here, with Ferrell's script and Adam McKay's direction, the character of Ron Burgundy becomes a full-bodied comic creation whose possibilities for laughs aren't nearly exhausted by the end credits. The result is an often hilarious celebration of moustaches, wide neckties, alcohol abuse, and good, old-fashioned sexism. Retaining the same cast and crew from ANCHORMAN, WAKE UP RON BURGUNDY sees the news team--led by Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate)--investigating an extremist organisation known as The Alarm Clock. With the same absurdist tone and style as its parent film, WAKE UP RON BURGUNDY is a treat for fans of the genre, and its existence goes to show how much time and effort went into making the silly comic gem.

obliviousness to a sweet sincerity, with a more arrogant variation on the same character: Ron Burgundy, a macho, narcissistic news anchor from the 1970s. Along with his news posse--roving reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd,Clueless), sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner), and dim-bulb weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell,Bruce Almighty)--Burgundy rules the roost in San Diego, fawned upon by groupies and supported by a weary producer (Fred Willard,Best In Show) who tolerates Burgundy's ego because of good ratings. But when Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate,View from the Top) arrives with ambitions to become an anchor herself, she threatens the male-dominated newsroom.Anchormanhas plenty of funny material, but it's as if Farrell couldn't decide what he really wanted to mock, and so took smart-ass cracks at everything in sight. I went to watch this film one Sunday night on the suggestion of my now ex boyfriend, who was (I've murdered him, which is why I use the past tense - kidding!) a bit of a fan of Will Ferrell. I myself am not a fan of his, purely because I don't really know his work (although everyone I know said that the film "Elf" was fantastic!) but I said I would go along anyway. To be honest, I really didn't expect much from it. But I actually really enjoyed myself - in fact, I've not had such a good laugh in a long time!
The film is about the rise and fall of Ron Burgundy, a local anchorman in San Diego in the 70s. His show is watched by all demographic groups in the area and his catchphrase "Stay classy, San Diego" is legendary. He is adored by all - or so it seems.
The film begins by putting up a disclaimer type text saying that the film is based on real events. Followed by the words "Only the names, locations and events have been changed." In other words, its not really based on real events! To get a laugh effectively before the film has even began in earnest is fairly impressive!
After this we get an idea of how vain and pompous Ron Burgundy actually is, as he primps and preens and hurls abuse at his minions before he goes on air. But he shows what a consumate professional he also is by switching instantly to much beloved anchorman the moment the camera starts rolling. The only problem is, he does this on autopilot so much that he will read anything that is put on the autocue. Yes, ANYTHING. (As my bastard ex whispered to me the second this was mentioned "This is definitely setting up for a joke later on". Unsurprisingly, he was right!)
In these first couple of minutes of the film, we are also introduced to Ron's co-stars, or henchmen as I prefer to call them. Brian (the lovely Paul Rudd, looking wonderfully sleazy), the ladies man; Champ, the chauvistic sports guy; and Brick, the polite likeable one. Brick is in reality fairly stupid (apparently he has an IQ of 48) but this provides a lot of the humour in the film.
So the film goes on to highlight Ron's charmed life and we see how girls hang on his every word as he attends a pool party with his cronies. And it is there he meets Veronica Corningstone (the fab Christina Applegate) and decides to chat her up. The trouble is, he makes a huge fool of himself - and then it turns out that she is joining the staff of the news.
All the men try to win her over but she turns them all down. However, she starts to develop a bit of a soft spot for Ron . . . and this is where the trouble begins.
Because although Veronica likes Ron very much, she is also very ambitious and it is her dream to be an anchorwoman. When a life-changing event happens in Ron's life courtesy of a cameo from Jack Black, and he doesn't turn up for work, Veronica steps in to replace him. And becomes his co-anchor. From then on, their relationship is over and all bets are off as war is waged.
To be honest, the storyline of this film is pretty pants. Its basically four men who are fairly chauvinistic and can't handle the idea that a woman can be as successful as a man. There are obviously some messages behind it, but as it is set 30 years ago, they are messages that have been clear already for a good while, therefore there is nothing new to learn from them. However, I would advise you to watch the film based mainly on the humorous situations that occur. Will Ferrell is fairly humorous as the clueless Ron, particularly when he is trying to appear clever (which he clearly isn't - he tells Veronica that San Diego means "Whale's vagina" in English) - in some ways he reminds me of an American 70s David Brent. But he is much more likeable than that, for I found myself liking him even despite of his many obvious flaws. However, I found Brick to be the funniest character, mainly due to his strange outbursts based on his acute stupidity - others may have found this humour infantile but, hey, it got the biggest laughs in the cinema I was in!
Vince Vaughn appears in the film also as a rival anchorman who appears with his own cronies every so often to taunt Ron. However, given that Ron's network is number one, and Vaughn's character's network is Number Two, Ron's team tend to come out on top in their petty little fights.
There are many cameos in the film, some which I found a little surprising. I wasn't too taken-aback to see jack Black, Ben Stiller, or even Luke Wilson. But Tim Robbins? I was fairly surprised by that, he always seems more of a "serious" actor to me, but he was very good in his role as a rival anchor.
To me, however, the undisputed star of the film was Baxter, Ron's dog, the "miniature Buddha, covered in hair". Ron can converse with him in dog barking language and he is soooo cute. Something not very nice happens to Baxter halfway through the film (it really upset me anyway!) but he emerges the hero, in my opinion. I would have liked to have stolen that wee doggie off the screen and taken him home. Don't think my landlord would have been happy though! --------------------------------------------------------------------
SOME QUOTES TO WHET YOUR APPETITE
Brian Fantana: Oh, that was one crazy party. I am hung over! Champ Kind: Ugh, tell me about it. I woke up this morning and I shit a squirrel. I mean it! Literally. Hell of it is, damn thing's still alive. So I got this shit-covered squirrel down in the office. Don't know what to name it. Brick Tamland: Ohhh, sorry Champ, I think I ate your chocolate squirrel.
Ron Burgundy: Brian, I'm gonna be quite honest, that smells like pure gasoline. Brian Fantana: They've done studies, you know. 60 percent of the time, it works every time. Ron Burgundy: That doesn't make sense.
Ron Burgundy: You are a smelly pirate hooker! Veronica Corningstone: You look like a blueberry! Ron Burgundy: Why don't you go back to your home on Whore Island! Veronica Corningstone: Well you... have bad hair!
Ron Burgundy: You stay classy, San Diego. I'm Ron Burgundy? Ed Harken: Dammit! Who typed a question mark on the Teleprompter?
Champ Kind: What in the hell's diversity? Ron Burgundy: [clears throat] Well, I could be wrong, but I believe uh, diversity is an old wooden ship that was used during the civil war era.
Ron Burgundy: (to Baxter the dog) What? You pooped in the refrigerator? And you ate the whole... wheel of cheese? How'd you do that? Heck, I'm not even mad; that's amazing! How 'bout we get you in your p.j.'s and we hit the hay.
Brick Tamland: I love... carpet. [pause] Brick Tamland: I love... desk. Ron Burgundy: Brick, are you just looking at things in the office and saying that you love them? Brick Tamland: I love lamp. Ron Burgundy: Do you really love the lamp, or are you just saying it because you saw it? Brick Tamland: I love lamp! I love lamp.
In conclusion, I would definitely advise you to watch this film if you want a really good laugh (and don't get offended too easily). If you're wanting a serious film, or a great storyline, you'd be in the wrong place with this one, but its great for some light entertainment that will make you leave the cinema still smiling!
Advantages: Laugh out loud funny, fine cameos Disadvantages: Not to everyones taste
...portrayal of Ron Burgundy in Anchorman is verging on comic genius. The role allows him to let loose with his manic style without it seeming over egged.
