This is one of the funniest films I've seen in a long long while....I loved it. It is something that will definitely have you laughing for some time. The image of the mafia has moved from the Godfather of the 70s to the Sopranos of the 90s and from seriousness to humour and silliness. Here you have Robert DeNiro playing a very well-known and visible crime family head who seems to be having a stressful time in his chosen career path. DeNiro chooses to seek assistance (probably from seeing so many of those Charter commercials) and tracks down Billy Crystal, a renowned psychologist for help. For the next two hours you watch the client/doctor relationship grow and develop through some very comical and hilarious scenes. Billy Crystal is outstanding in his role as a somewhat scared psychiatrist and DeNiro is tremendous as a member of the Mafia along with his cronies who play great roles. If you are having a hard time imagining DeNiro in a comedic role, then this is a must see film, for you won't believe it unless you see it. I did also fear that Robert DeNiro would make a complete mockery of the gangster roles he has made so memorable in the past and destroy all his earlier work and potentially his career but my concern was thrown aside. DeNiro was very funny yet there was still tremendous respect for his character and the hard image was still perserved just through his personality and aura. I do have a few minor complaints about the film however: When DeNiro’s not on screen the movie slows down a bit and the tempo slows (Crystal’s stand-up bit at the end is tiresome) and the film seemed a little long but 99% of that was enjoyable humour. Definitely a suprising success and a film well worth the money.
ker's bet as to who's going to be funnier and who's going to give the more nuanced performance. Somehow, though, De Niro walks away with most of the laughs, mugging gleefull...
