Robert DeNiro once again gives an excellent performance as a rich mobster, but this time in a comedy take on the wise guy genre. DeNiro’s character is suffering from breakdowns and panic attacks, and so calls upon the help of psychiatrist, played by Billy Crystal, to help him. Analyze This is frequently funny, especially for fans of the serious side of the genre, and DeNiro’s acting is, as ever, very good – although his crying is rather unrealistic, but this was probably deliberate so as to boost the comedy. The rest of the cast is also good, Billy Crystal doing a good job of unwilling employee of the mob and Lisa Kudrow as his fiancé. The film also contains a bit of action and tension, but the main feature is the humorous script. The extra features on the DVD are of a good quality, although a making-of featurette in addition to the outtakes and feature length documentary would be welcome. Analyze This is a very good film, not quite excellent though, and is especially funny for fans of serious mobster films.
