It's a long time since I've seen a film that affected me so deeply as this one did. I can start this review with that thought because it's important. I thought I knew why it was so important to do the things I've been doing. Washing out the baked bean cans for the recycling every other Friday. Collecting old newspapers into bags to make into more newspapers for other people to read. Trying not to mind the tiny flies that float so busily out of the compost bin every time I lift the lid to add more carrot peelings and onion skins. Growing fruit and veg. Shopping locally. Being aware of how far things have travelled to get to me. Using green electricity. Re-usable nappies. Buses. You know. All that stuff.
I thought I knew, really knew why I was doing it, and to be fair I did. To an extent. The moral choice has never been something that I didn't get. But the science. The science evaded me somewhat. If you'd asked me a week ago to explain the science of climate change, I'd have probably mumbled something about CO2 and moved the conversation to compost, or riding bicycles to work instead of using cars - that kind of thing. This film has done more than reaffirm my beliefs in the actions I take to try and help the Earth get better, it has educated me, and knowledge, as they say, is power.

The Film
Al Gore has been travelling the world with his slide show - a series of slides that he uses to illustrate his "travelling global warming show". It's not about taking a piece out of current politicians….it's not about Al Gore being a bit upset about not getting to be President of the United States. It's not even about Mr Gore getting on the environmental bandwagon in an attempt to cash in on it, as many businesses are doing these days (though whatever their reasons, it's all good, isn't it??) No, it's actually not about Al Gore. It's about the truth of what is happening in our world, what we're doing to our Earth, and what, in effect, the people who rule the world are LETTING us do, without discussion of the consequences. Because to many, the consequences are as inconvenient as the truth.
"There are good people who are in politics in both parties who hold this at arms length because if they acknowledge it and recognise it then the moral imperative to make big changes is inescapable" Al Gore
The slides are simple. They help to illustrate in the simplest ways that the problems we have didn't happen overnight. They have been visible for years, but being as inconvenient as they are to world economy, to the pockets of the fat cats, to the manufacturers of lovely shiny cars, they got swept under the proverbial carpet.
The slides help to illustrate in an amazingly simple way that the misconceptions and the urban myths that we've been fed for so long are simply not true. There are scientists across the years that have been paid to keep certain issues quiet, helping the guys who run our countries to ignore the moral and ethical questions over letting people poison the planet.
It's about choice, and Gore makes this very clear. In the film there are small pockets of background to his life, which are not so much about him as a man, but about thought processes and belief systems. His son nearly died as a child as a result of a car accident. Al Gore was suddenly given an insight into the sense of taking something for granted and then having to deal with the idea that it could be so easily taken away from you. His father grew tobacco for years. When his older sister died of lung cancer having smoked home grown tobacco for years, his father chose to give up tobacco growing, despite the financial question. Some things are more important than money…aren't they?
He tries to break down all those obstacles we use to stop us from standing up and making changes. And he does. Every obstacle you can think of. In the simplest of ways, with the simplest of truths. He feels it's his path to follow, to help people see the truth. City by city, person by person, family by family.
He makes a very valid point near the end of the film. We have everything we need to make the changes -
"Humanity already possesses the fundamental scientific, technical and industrial know-how to solve the carbon and climate problems…" Pacala S and Socolow R August 13th 2004
- we just have to keep taking action, keep talking, keep writing letters to politicians, keep doing our bit.

What I Thought.
This is a brilliant film. It's so simple, it's so understated and it hits all the right buttons with seemingly very little effort. There are snippets of Al Gore's personal life and history that some people have said seem out of place in this film, but to me, there are perfectly placed to help illustrate his journey, which in truth is as important as my journey or yours, to understand and communicate the understanding of climate change. I learnt so much from this film and after one sitting, wanted to watch it again. That says quite a lot really. For me, it's the knowledge that I gained from the film and the slides that will stay with me and though I already do a lot of the things which are listed so cleverly in the end credits, I can explain climate change so much better now, having spent 93 minutes of my life watching a man talk about a series of slides like a professor at a university. Sometimes it doesn't matter if we can't explain something eloquently, or with the correct language. I know that. It's the understanding and the application of that understanding that is important. I know that too. But I feel empowered by this film, and I think you probably will too.

A Final Thought.
My niece is four years old. A few weeks ago, sitting at her kitchen table, in the middle of a game of hairdressers, she asked me if I had a car. I said no. She asked why. I said it was because I didn't really need one. I could walk places, get the bus. She said that the reason it rained so much was because of the cars. I asked her what she meant. She said that the cars put bad air into the sky and that made the rain and that if I didn't have a car that meant I was helping, didn't it? I said yes.
It's about having your own understanding of how things truly are. And more than that, it's about helping. No-one gets to save the world alone, it has to be a joint effort, with all the small things adding up together to make one huge concerned blitz spirited effort with the only prize being the knowledge that our children will get to see the beautiful world we grew up taking for granted. That's all. That's enough.
I'll leave you with this quote from the film. It kind of says it all really…
"If you love your planet…if you love your children…you HAVE to see this film…"

Rent it, buy it, borrow it.
It's 93 minutes long, it balances humour with reality, it brings you understanding, it brings the horror of all the possibilities of global warming home to roost with images you won't forget in a hurry but more than that, more than that it will give you such a feeling of power to make changes to stop those scientific predictions from becoming truth that you'll cry with the pure joy of it.
Advantages: Fairly compelling viewing, good mix of live speech/lecture & other footage, makes you think Disadvantages: Fairly predictable for some, won't appeal to all, political element may make you more sceptical
...is about but just incase, an inconvenient truth basically shows a lecture that Al Gore (who lost out to George 'Dubya' Bush in the year 2000 presidential elections) gave about the dangers and warning of global warming/climate change, detailing the effects that this has already had on areas around the world and warning what the future holds if we all don't fully address this. It is seen as a political piece of propaganda but its up to you whether ... ...otherwise just read blankly from an auto cue then you'd be turning off alot quicker one way or the other! No I was fairly intrigued to keep watching given his clear passion for the subject, so that did help and the footage put in context to what he was explaining made it more compelling to me. I think that if you already have an interest and a belief in this issue then its worth a watch as it certainly is quite compelling, although there will be ...

...follow (Super-Size Me for example), An Inconvenient Truth is essentially one of Al Gore's lectures, put onto film, with a few clips 'tacked on' to break up the never ending flow of graphs. Some just don't seem to fit with the nature of the film, for example, the clip of Al Gore losing the 2000 American elections. Humour plays a small part in Gore's fight, with cartoons displaying simple-to-follow explanations of global warming, and stories that poke fun of the intellect of the American education system. Unfortunately, despite its best efforts to appeal to a wider audience, only scientists will be able to sit comfortably throughout the films running time. Some parts of the lecture have the American audience in stitches, ...

An InconvenientTruth - The work of the Nobel Peace Prize Winner Al Gore.
As already mentioned in my review from June 2007 this film and DVD is very important and I now feel it will go down as one of the most influential documentaries of the noughties. It remains extremely compelling and continues to impact on opinion worldwide.
The award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Al Gore on the issue of Climate Change yesterday really recognises his achievements and I believe, fully vindicates this film. Some of the criticisms of it may be grounded, but nobody can deny the positive moral message and worldwide warning. President Bush's cynical conference at the end of September 2007 attempted to undermine the real issues associated with Climate Change and fortunately the Nobel Peace Prize committee has recognised the true American Hero ...
Advantages: Brings together a lot of pertinent information in easily digestible cuhnks Disadvantages: Won't tell those in the know anything new
composers would have slapped all over this film because it deals with such an emotive issue. Though there are flourishes of solo piano often associated with tugging the heartstrings, they are used more as a backdrop to Gore's introduction of the subject. They also highlight his personal tragedies rather than the main subject. The biographical sections are often accompanied by jangling steel guitar melodies that are there to suggest he's a man of the people and a country boy at heart. Less acceptable is the theme song by Melissa Etheridge that is more about her attaching her name to a cause than respectable song-writing.
"An InconvenientTruth" is a strong educational tool that seeks to enlighten those that understand little about climate change and its possible impact. Its straightforward approach to the subject matter will open up the subject ...

DVD Description
A movie based on a PowerPoint presentation by a former presidential candidate may not sound exciting, but once AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH hits its stride viewers may be surprised how compelling the subject matter proves to be. While many high-ranking political figures continue to argue about global warming, Al Gore has plunged headlong into a serious wake-up call for the planet with a series of lectures about the problem. It's on one of these lectures that this movie from director Davis Guggenheim is based. Guggenheim breaks up Gore's delivery by illustrating his points with film footage, much of which features the former Democratic nominee exploring the globe as he examines the effects of global warming. Gore's speech is neatly divided between calm recitations of the facts about the issue and several stories of a personal nature. His skills as an orator are considerable, and it's hard not to be alarmed by most of what he has to say. Indeed, as Gore relates tales of melting polar icecaps, rising global temperatures, and the reluctance of political leaders to do something about the problem, the film takes on an air of hopelessness and doom, especially as no easy solutions are offered. Gore's advice is for individuals to take steps to reduce their own inadvertent poisoning of the atmosphere, and to persuade others to do likewise. It's a powerful message, and one that is likely to remain in non-cynical minds long after the film comes to a conclusion.
