Affair, directed by Leo McCarey, who also made the original. Grant and Kerr are strangers on an ocean liner, involved with other people, who can't resist each other for a shipboard romance. But they decide to test whether this is the real thing by agreeing to split up, then meeting in six months atop the Empire State Building. Is there anyone who can resist that set-up or the tragic romantic mishap that nearly splits them up? Can you keep dry eyes during the famous finale? Some prefer the original (with Charles Boyer); practically no one liked the underrated 1994 remake with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. While occasionally a shade slow, this one soars on Grant's charm and Kerr's noble suffering. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

Advantages: Utterly original, hilarious, touching, fantastic performances. Disadvantages: May seem a little confusing for some.
...a bad thing, and should be welcomed as one of the true recent entirely original films. The only films that even compares to this on even the most basic level are Ghost World and Crumb, both of which are neatly tied to American Splendor in a roundabout way. Ghost World was also adapted from a small comic book about everyday life and was directed by Terry Zwigoff. Zwigoff himself directed the documentary on the life of Robert Crumb, who appears as a character in American Splendor. Pekar on his voiceover even makes a point of referencing the former film by proclaiming "he had a film made about him too". It would be unfair to compare the two films, as one is a full documentary and this is a crossing of multiple genres, but they still manage to successfully go together.
What makes American Splendor so fascinating is the character of Harvey...

...A visually stunning film. It encompasses the story of Eisenheim, Vienna's great magician. As a boy Eisenheim had fallen in love with a young Duchess Sophie but because of his low class they are torn apart. Eisenheim then wonders off and travels the world learning magic and arrives back in Vienna some 15 years later to find that Sophie is marrying the Crown Prince of the Empire a cruel man who has already killed one wife and has a reputation for violence.
They rekindle their love after meeting at one of Eisenheim's stage productions. However Sophie is under constant surveillence by Uhl (Paul Giamatti) the Chief Inspector and right hand man to the crown prince. Upon reporting their affair to the prince, the prince gets drunk and kills Sophie. Eisenheim is heart broken and disappears for a while and then reappears with the ability...

Advantages: Very oddball Disadvantages: Very oddball - you'll either love it or hate
...“American Splendor” won a host of awards:
Fipresci award (Cannes Film Festival 2003)
Grand jury Prize (Sundance Film Festival 2003)
Guardian new directors award (Edinburgh Festival 2003)
It also got an Academy Award nomination for best adapted screenplay.
For me, it was a real surprise to see a refreshingly different movie – one which blurs all the boundaries between fiction, biography, documentary, comedy, tragicomedy… where do you want me to stop?
Crucial to the whole thing is Paul Giamatti, who plays Harvey Pekar. For those of you who haven’t heard of him, he is the creator of a cult American comic (or should I say, graphic novel) called “American Splendor”. Which is where the title comes from.
He is a filing clerk, stuck in a boring job, but when it comes down to it, content to stay in his boring job, because it pays the bills...
