With a plot line like that (above) I was expecting four nerds in glasses, a team of cheerleaders, and a headmaster strict on punishment who has a crush on the French mistress. WRONG. First things first American Pie is not the hardcore humour "Porky's" style film that the cinema trailer leads you to think it is. Yes there is nudity (briefly) yes there is jokes about sex and yes the girls need to be persuaded to lose their virginity. BUT the pace of the film is far more gentle and deeper than any 80s teen comedy ever was. The film's tone concentrates far more on the insecurities that we all had , and the jokes go between outrageous physical gags to subtle digs at all our teen worries. In-fact, their are carefully placed messages in the film which if done wrong could have made the film another preachy American moral tale. People are not always what you expect, sometimes you have to reach beyond who you think you are and sex isn't the be all and end all, it's just one of the many hurdles kids need to get over. However these messages work. Why? Because surprisingly as the film progresses you warm to the characters. They start as stereotypes and develop into individuals. The characters appear genuine - casting wise it reminded me of FRIENDS (TV) as the actors seem to resemble their screen counterparts. For me many of the films funnier moments weren't the obvious jokes (yes the pie), they were in the way character's said things.
