Lately, all I seem to have done is watched a lot of films, and I have not been particularly impressed with many of them, so I end up feeling really let down when a film fails to live up to it's hype. You probably all know the drill with the American Pie series. It looks at the lives of high school/college guys and girls, and then makes as many jokes about virginity, bodily excretions, masturbation, toilet habits, and basically anything else which could considered in poor taste, and is it has the faintest chance of offending someone then it sure to be included somewhere in the film.
Jason Biggs returns as Jim, the hapless hero type who we saw at the end of the second film finally getting his girl, or a girl come to think of it!. That girl he wooed was Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), and in the third, and reportedly final instalment of the series, we see the two them still very much together, constanly talking about how much 'boning' they do, but more importantly, Jim has decided to ask Michelle to marry him, and finally make his parents proud after bringing much shame and embarassment to them over the last few years, but true to form even the proposal ends up with Jim embarassing his father. I don't want to give too many of the jokes away, so I won't elaborate on why,
but he manages to find himself exposed twice within the space of twenty minutes.
Jim wants to make sure that Michelle gets the wedding she wants, whilst also proving to her parents that he is a worthy husband, because his first meeting with them found Jim in a sexual position with their beloved dog whilst it was licking food from various parts of Stifler's body. The mind boggles I am sure! With this in mind, the friends sent off on a mini road trip to get Michelle the dress of her dreams, and in order to track down the dress designer, and we see them hitting some bars and clubs, and Stifler ends up in a gay bar, where he sets up a dance off between himself and a stereotypical biker type, because he cannot accept that the gay men in the bar do not want a piece of him, as he is sure he is irresistable to everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation!! This is the funniest part of the film, and worth watching just for those 5 minutes. The choreography is genius, and I am sure this will become a classic film scene that is replayed many times in the coming years.
There are many more escapades involving the characters such as sex with a stranger, who turns out to be the groom's grandmother, eating dog excrement, pretending it is a chocolate truffle, and finally shaving your pubic hair, throwing it out of your hotel room window and giving all of the guests furballs and the wedding cake it's own furry coat! The biker from the bar even provides the female entertainment for Jim's stag night, which not surprisingly does not go as planned.
There are many familiar faces, but the notable exceptions were Chris Klein, Shannon Elizabeth, Tara Reid and Mena Suvari, whose careers seemed to take off after the first film, and maybe they thought they were too good for this type of film, but judging by the lack of exposure and press coverage of them all lately, it make have been a bad decision, and to be honest they are not missed, and they are not even referred to which I found but strange.
Stifler (Seann William Scott) is back with a vengeance, and is as funny as ever, and if it is was possible, he is even more manic and unpredictable in the other films, but he becomes quite a tragic figure who I really started to feel sorry for as he realises that his actions have made him a liability. The brunt of many of his jokes, Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) returns, and he is less of an enigma than in the other films, but seems to spend most of his time dreaming about Stifler's mum (Jennifer Coolidge), who he slept with a few years prior. Third wheel, and the completely forgettable character of Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) is resurrected, and he may have been better taking the same route as Klein and co, as I cannot recall one word, never mind a whole sentence that he uttered in the film. Eugene Levy is excellent as Jim's dad, although not as funny as in the first two films, he still has some classic lines, which are some of the funniest in the film.
This film bucks the trend of the follow ups never matching the original, as this is without doubt the funniest film of the three. To coin a teenage phrase, this is gross, but in a good way. The film is crewd, it is in bad taste, but it is done in such a way you can't help but laugh at how horrendous the scrapes they get into are, whilst the emotions and dreams surrounding the wedding and the marriage are dealt with in a surprisingly tender and emotional way I would never have expected possible, and director Jesse Dylan really got it right.
As with the other instalments, the soundtrack is pretty decent, and includes The Foo Fighters, Sum 41 and other American rock bands. I would recommend this film if you want some cheap laughs, and the hint of a decent storyline. It is the only film I have watched lately that I would gladly watch again. Go on....you know you want to watch it too!
