Recently released just before christmas, American Pie: The Naked Mile is number five in the series and was a straight to DVD release. Be expected to pay full whack for this film brand new roughly between £11 - £16, but second hand you could get it for around £7.
Story -
American Pie films have always been based 'loosely' around a group of American guys still in High school and enticing their way through the new experiences of sex and girls. This one fairs no different.
Erik is a Stifler. A household name to live up to and unfortunatly he is still a virgin. Desperate to fulfill his family name and announce his manhood he begs his girlfriend (Tracy) for sex. Though she isn't ready and gives him a guilt free pass for the weekend where he travels up with his friends to see cousin (Dwight) Stifler to run the Naked Mile and hopefully achieve the goals he set out for.
Trust me i know what you are thinking! Yet another lame excuse to carry on the 'American Pie' franchise maybe they should have stopped at 4: Band Camp. But actually this film and its story offers scenes of fun, frolick and laughter. Its much more closer to the original in both events and story.
A few memorable scenes is when he fakes an illness so he can just stay home and watch porn
and ultimately in true American Pie style he gets caught and ends up 'shooting his load' all over his grandma and she dies of a heart attack. This particular scene had me in stitches as it is unpredicted, you just expect him to get caught and get embarassed. Another good scene is where he needs to go to the tiolet whilst travelling in the car. After deciding to do it out the window it directs itself into the back window and into his sleeping friends face. All in true Dumb and Dumber slap stick of course.
Or course you get your weaker scenes as well such as when he and his girlfriend get caught in the basement and he hides in the dryer and with such terrible bowl problems you can only guess what happens next. This is all rather nonsense and too over the top.
A main feature in the story is a feud between them and a group of popular midgets or to be politically correct 'little people'. The scenes are always a laugh as at times they make the leader of the little people quite camp without realising it. Their strong as well - i highly recomend the football scenes.
A let down though is in its title. The naked mile finished half way through the film and there isn't a great deal of emphasis put on it. Its more about Erik's quest for sex during his guilt free weekend.
There are also scenes obviously copied from the more popular 3 in the series. There's a dance scene obviously captured from 3: The wedding and during one of his friends sex scenes he gets a 'rough' girl - hindsight a reminder from no. 1 between Jim and Michelle. There is a lot of name dropping as well just to remind you that this is a series of films all related, so expect names like the original stifler, Jim and Michelle to pop up.
The story does become quite predictable however, but with a few laughs here and there it isn't too off putting, but some will be put off from the ultimate message that is conveyed at the end of the film. Love.
Acting / Cast -
The cast of American Pie: The Naked Mile includes many newcomers to the acting scene, not many have been in popular or well known moves albeit Jim's dad that always seems to make a guest appearance.
Johnny White (Erik) --> Goosebumps TV Series Steve Talley (Dwight Stifler) --> no well known appearances Jake Siegel (Cooze) --> no well known appearances Ross Thomas (Ryan) --> CSI TV Series Candace Kroslak (Brandy) --> CSI Miami TV Series Jessy Schram (Tracy) --> Boston Legal TV Series Eugene Levy (Jim's Dad) --> American Pie series/ Cheaper by the Dozen 2
I have to give the film credit though. For such a low budget, the acting isn't half as bad Band Camp and at times extremely convincing. They act as you expect any American Youth who are obviously not old enough to drive and afford the insurance but do, do. They really bring a comedic aura to the film which is good because thats what American Pie is all about.
I must say however that Erik looks like a Frankie Muniz lookalike (Malcom in the Middle) and Tracy looks extremely young in this film bearly legal but she reminds me of a very and i mean very (If it possible) a young verison of Hilary Duff.
Soundtrack -
The film tries and offers a wide range of punk pop tunes but nothing very memorable. Some a little catchy but dont play for long.
Extremely disapointed by the lack of any extras whatso ever! But i suppose thats what you get with straight to DVD Releases.
Overall American Pie 5: The Naked Mile is a vast improvement to band Camp. Lets cherish the memory here and don't ruin it by making a sixth! The film offers a wide range of laughs that many people will find funny and its not a bad film either. Nothing too shocking and probably not as memorable as the first 3, but it offers a good easy to watch harmless piece of comedy.
