There is a well-known rule of thumb in the world of the silver screen, which states that sequels very rarely reach the standards set by their predecessors... but in the case of ‘American Pie 2’, I can safely say that if you liked the first one, then you will enjoy this just as much, if not more. The humour is the same, there is still an element of slapstick and cringing embarrassment, and best of all, ALL the characters have returned to play a part in the second film.

And I do mean all of them – even the bit part players from the original film are there, including Kev’s older brother, Stifler’s obnoxious sibling, and the two ‘MILF’ dudes at the party. All the main characters make a second appearance too, and this makes it so much easier to get back into the film right from the start, as Jim is caught in a position even more compromising than the infamous apple pie moment!

So what’s the plot then? As you might guess, it’s not too complicated, but leaves plenty of room for laughs – Jim, Finch, Oz, Kev and Stifler have all finished their first year at various colleges and have returned to Great Falls for the summer. Things have changed though – Vicky and Kev are no longer together (having split up at the end of ‘American Pie’), the lovely Nadia, who is still the object of Jim’s affections, has returned to the Czech Republic (but she will be coming back to visit him over the summer, which tips him into a frenzy of sex-related worries!), Heather has gone to Europe on a study course, and Finch is adrift and alone without the comforting touch of Stifler’s Mum!

There is the obligatory huge party at Stifler’s house, but things do not go well – the police arrive to break it up, and the boys feel like everything has changed while they have been away... but there is still time for Stifler to become the unwitting victim of a party incident that almost matches his fate in the first film! He can almost taste the bubbles...

However, they then decide to do something with their summer of ‘immortality’, and rent a beach house down by the lake – the plan is to be five lads on holiday, doing summer jobs and having huge parties with all the girls from the beach, naturally... and you can probably predict what happens from there on. There are plenty of laughs along the way, as they take a job painting houses, Stifler becomes convinced that ‘lesbians live here’, and then you have the obligatory immense party to celebrate the end of the summer holidays.

All the girls make an appearance, including Michelle from band camp, Nadia and Jessica, while Eugene Levy is again superb as Jim’s Dad, delivering a great performance as the nervous but well-meaning father (and look out for the brief cameo by the bloke who used to play Benny in ‘LA Law’). All in all, this is a daft but well-made and very funny film – the teenage angst and the slapstick humour are exaggerated, but did you expect anything less? And I think that is what makes it so funny, so if you liked ‘American Pie’, you will definitely laugh your socks off at this – and you will never see superglue in the same light again!
