Washington's Frank Lucas against Russell Crowe's law enforcer Richie Roberts. Spread over a necessarily prolonged running time, their story is then brutally, expertly, told. And whileAmerican Gangsterisn't in the league of prime Scorsese and Coppolla classics (such asGoodfellasandThe Godfather), it's the nearest we've come in quite some time to something of that ilk. It's all based on a true story, which does mean you need to forgive it some of its obvious narrative conventions, yet this also lends it a gravitas that the film eagerly makes the most of.It's great too to see British director Ridley Scott tackling meatier material again. This is the man, after all, who gave usBlade Runner,AlienandGladiator, and he duly delivers withAmerican Gangster. His finest work it isn't, but an engrossing, explosive and hard-as-nails drama it absolutely is.What's more,American Gangsteris powered by two of the finest leading men working in Hollywood right now, and it's terrific to see Washington and Crowe on top form here. And while in cinematic terms it's hardly a film that treads new ground, it's nonetheless a proper, grown-up and engrossing movie, and a very good one at that. --Jon Foster

Advantages: 2 Great actors, and one superb director Disadvantages: none!
This has to be one of my all time favourites! What can i say, one of the best acted and directed ever, plus it has a great actor in it! The film starts off about when he is a small time drug dealer in harlem, NY, and then moves onto how he becomes a bigger drug lord in the streets on New York.
The plot of the film is superb! It has you gripping onto the edge of your seat throughout the film as you don't know when he is/isn't going to get caught ...

...AmericanGangster is an amazing film showing maturity from director Ridley Scott (Bladerunner), screen writer Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List) and actors Denzil Washington (Malcolm X) and Russell Crowe (Gladiator), all already respected in their fields.
It's based on the true story of real gangster Frank Lucas who in the seventies masterminded the US military to smuggle pure heroin into America on service planes. As the Vietnam War was still in full flow, there were flights going backwards and forwards constantly and with his cousin in the army he's able to smuggle the heroin from South East Asia with ease.
The film initially starts off as brutal as the opening credits of Goodfellas, but that's more less where the similarity ends. This is more the kind of gritty drama and scenarios that you would see in an episode of The Wire...

Advantages: Interesting portrayal of one of Americas most succesful gangsters Disadvantages: Overlong, and distracting sidestories
..., the most renown gangster of afro American origin and certainly most profitable in American history; AmericanGangster starts on an impressive level. Sadly however I found its story needlessly elongated and often littered with irrelevant side issues (a bit like one of my reviews I hear you cry!). AmericanGangster is just too long, for the story and script line that goes along with it. Don't get me wrong I love long movies, especially long gangster movies my favourite gangster movie being the massive Once Upon A Time In America, a movie that like AmericanGangster charts a story surrounding gangsters over a long period of time.
When you hear Russell Crowe speak in interviews, and in the special features that come with the DVD (when it is released March 2008) he seems under the impression that the film was made round him, and the employment...

Review: A cocksure upstart that has swaggered onto the scene, confident that it can take its place at the table with the big boys (The Times, 04/02/2008)
Scott's best film since GLADIATOR is a classy cops 'n robbers thriller where the latter outclasses the former. Crowe tries to redress the imbalance with a committed performance, but you can tell he knows it's Washington's movie (Total Film, 18/01/2008)
DVD Description
AMERICAN GANGSTER is based on a true story and set in 1968 Harlem, where Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) is a driver for Bumpy Johnson, one of the top figures in the city's criminal world. When Bumpy dies, Lucas swoops in, taking over his predecessor's empire and expanding it over the next few years with his sale of a particularly potent brand of heroin. Meanwhile, New Jersey cop Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) begins to investigate the New York drug world and discovers that there's a new power in town. Thanks to screenwriter Steve Zaillian, as well as Washington and Crowe, AMERICAN GANGSTER creates a convincing portrait of two men who are neither entirely good nor entirely bad. Washington plays Lucas as a man who buys his mother a palatial home but doesn't hesitate to beat his brother's head against a window. Crowe's Roberts may turn in a million-dollar find, but he cheats on his wife. Sadly, they only meet onscreen toward the end of the film, but the minimal interaction between the two Oscar winners is fascinating. Even though the focus is on Lucas and Roberts, AMERICAN GANGSTER is filled with a wealth of strong characters played by talented actors, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Josh Brolin, Ted Levine, John Hawkes, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Carla Gugino, Ruby Dee, Joe Morton, and rappers T.I. and RZA. It's an epic film, with a run time of over two and a half hours, but it's time well spent. Fans of classic crime films such as THE GODFATHER, SERPICO, and CARLITO'S WAY will certainly be pleased by this addition to the genre.
