This film, to borrow the words from its title, is beautiful. I love this film, so much in fact that I have bought the video from America where it is still only available for rental! It is my theory that everyone who sees it can identify with something in the film and for this reason that it has a special meaning for everybody. Granted, the story is not a normal everyday occurrence and contrary to popular belief, it is not the actual story line that is supposed to portray everyday America (or in fact any country in the Western world). It is what the story represents and the alarming underlying truth of what is being suggested to the audience that are important. The characters are delivered to us with superb acting, particularly from Kevin Spacey who is superb and deserved both his Oscar and Bafta and indeed any of the other awards that were bestowed upon him. He plays a middle aged man, Lester Burnham, who, feeling unsatisfied, decides to change his life, a change that is greatly inspired by meeting his daughter’s friend Angela. Annette Bening is also excellent as his suffering wife Carolyn, a suffering which is not entirely caused by her husband I might hasten to add. She too makes changes to her life, although these are less drastic, and the family is swept into a spiral of events ending with the dramatic conclusion. The whole thing is done with surprising humour and is both touching and disturbing. Also notable is the brilliant acting of Wes Bentley, Mena Suvari, Thora Birch and Chris Cooper and to Sam Mendes, let’s see you back in the director’s chair where you belong!
