There was so much hype about this film that it put me off – also from reviews & television stuff, it appeared to be a story of a middle-aged man who lusts after a young girl (Lolita again) However, I’m very glad I did bother to watch it. The story was surprisingly better than I had thought and had more substance. Kevin Spacey plays a middle-aged man who is disillusioned with his life. Daydreams about his daughter’s friend (who is 17/18 years old not 13/14 like I thought she was going to be) give him the push to change things in his life. He begins to workout, quits his boring job and gets a job at a burger bar. This film probably means more to an American audience as it deals with American values & the American dream life (& that it’s not everything it’s thought to be). It also shows that the images that people project are not really the people they are. Annette Benning is excellent as Spacey’s power-driven wife who is increasingly angered by the changes in her husband. It is a sad film in a way though a happy ending would have spoilt it totally and I don’t think it’s as brilliant as it was made out to be during the run up to the Oscars. However, it is a film worth seeing and it has something to say as well as being entertainment.
