I'm 52, grandmother of 9, poet, wannabe writer, breed Nubian goats, and am going to start making soaps and fudge from my goat milk eventually. I'd like to become semi self -sufficient; I have planted numerous fruit trees and keep chickens for eggs.

I've heard mixed reviews about "American Beauty" - my best friend and her hubby watched it and thought it was a waste of money, mine watched it and thought it was "an ok movie". He said he could understand where the thoughts of the character played by Kevin Spacey, were at. This is a male mid-life crisis movie, and with hubby being 36 and having one of his own, I suppose that leads to the understanding of the main person here - where some of us just "watched a movie".
He felt it was pretty well acted, and said that basically the guy had everything but felt that he had nothing, so he blackmails his boss ("screws the guy over"was how he put it ) and gets a settlement even as he loses his job. He looks back at his romance with his wife, when they were young, and desperately wants to recapture the spontaneity of those times - and one attempt leads to her rebuttal because he is trying to make love to her on their expensive couch (which she does not want to mess up, because of it's value).
His attraction to the younger girl stems more from her acceptance of him, when he feels rejected by his wife, who he truly loves. The movie exams his feelings and attempts to come to terms with his life. He throws off the high-poered job and gets hired at a fast food restaurant, over-qualified as a mere crew member but searching for the position with the least responsibility.
The ending was not what you'd expect, and even at the end there is a twist. Maybe this is a movie for the 30's and 40's male then, in order for it to get the recognition it desired?Well acted, and a pretty good story line.

Yep, it's all that and very balanced too, which is always helpful to anyone needing to know about a film like this. It probably is a male thing, actually. You may have nailed it there :-)
