Rarely does a film of such artistic brilliance win the popular accolades that American Beauty has basked in. This multi-award winning film directed by Sam Mendes has recently come out on video in the UK and i suggest anyone who missed it in the cinema should catch the opportunity to see it.
The film opens on a seeming utopian suburban american family. As we begin to see the cracks in this facade, Mendes's skill begins to come to the fore. His directing weaves the storyline, with a message that remains always delightfully subtle and simple beauty for it's own sake.
Kevin Spacey's portrayl of the stereotypical suburnban husband pushed beyond breaking point in brilliant, both darkly comical and heart-rending. However for me Wes Bentley gives the most powerful performance, the abused son of an army colonel, he hides behind the eye of a movie camera, which eventually allows him to see the true beauty in the very simplicity of being.
The film benefits immensly from the oscar winning score which really captures the audience and emerces them in the moment.
If you see one film this winter, seee the beauty of American Beauty. It will leave you touched and may just open your eyes to new realms of beauty.
