'the world is full of beauty'...well this film suggests the truth and the irony available in this line. The lives of unordinary 'ordinary' people are explored. The most touching character is Nicky played by Wes Bentley. This character has the self assurance and dignity to lift this film into a higher realm of thought and entertainment. The film itself is darkly claustrophobic giving the sense of being inside one persons mind (be that the character that Spacy plays or the external character of the watcher). Thematically the film encapsulates the attitudes of modern times as 'Fight Club' did...that we have awoken to the mundane reality of life and can't cope with being 'ordinary'. This is our thought; but we are shown through the examples in this film that we are each different and that 'ordinariness' comes from a preoccupation with being special. American Beauty is entertaining and can be seen easily in these terms; but with a little thought, a lot more can be gained from this viewing pleasure. Deserved of the awards. If you enjoy the weirdness of life watch this film!
