American Beauty is a haunting, beautiful film, and a wonderful directorial debut from Sam Mendes. The study o fone middle-aged man's descent into breakdown and point of self-discovery is understated and sensitive. By way of contrast, the portrayal of his wife as a social-climbing, shrieking monster is unconvincing and, frnakly, two-dimensional. However, in the middle of it all, Mena Suvari looks fragile and beautiful, and the other central characters pursue their drug dealing, growing up and homophobia with a frightening passion. The camera moves silently among the cast like a spy, and the story is treated with a light touch. Maybe the film didn't deserve the awards, but it is undeniably good.
