I saw American Beauty on the second night it was released in the UK. Of all the most recent films I have seen this one has had the biggest impact. Why , for several reasons , first of all this is acting at its highest level, throughout the length of the film all the cast shine. There are no duff acting roles. The acting of Spacey & Benning is superb, but this is not to put down any of the other performances which still linger in my mind several weeks later. For me this is the true test of a great film how well does it remain in memory weeks & months later. This one will remain. There are scenes in American Beauty which are truly breathtaking not in a cinematic sense but merely by the way they grip the imagination, for instance when the Neighbour kisses Spacey's character, this will catch you out, it did me. This is a triumph of all aspects of fine Film drama.
The story revolves around Lester ( Played by Kevin Spacey )who quits his job to find himself. Some would say because of a mid life crisis. the changes in Lester cause massive disruption in his family life. His wife ( Annette Benning ) can't stand him, neither can his daughter. Overlaid on this are two clever subplots; the Daughter is desperately trying to find love & gets it from her very weird but wonderful Neighbours son. Secondly the Wife wants to be seen as the best Real Estate Agent in the district and will do anything to get that including sleeping with her chief rival.
Some people wont like it for its harsh appraisal of suburban, middle class American life, but for me its this very harshness combined with a razor sharp wit that makes it such compelling viewing. This is one of the most HONEST films I've ever seen . If you like clever humour, a well written script, fine cinematography plus the very best acting performances, this is the film to see. Don't miss it.
