I had seen this film a few years ago, but could not remember anything about it, so when my boyfriend suggested watching it last night, after picking it up in Tesco for 3 pounds, we gave it another go.
It was made in 2001 and co-written by Billy Crystal
The Story -------------
The story is based around 2 famous actors (Zeta-Jones and Cusack) Named Eddie and Gwen, they have been an on screen as well as real life couple for many years, and while starring together in numerous romance films, made each other rich and famous.
There lives crumble as Gwen leaves Eddie for a young Spanish man (Hank Azaria). Leaving Eddie emotionally unstable and Gwen being hated by millions. Their last film they made together is due o be released soon and will be shown at a press junket.
Its the job of film publicist Lee (Crystal) to get the separated couple together at the junket and playing nicely in front of the press. In the hope the press will focus on the couples personal lives and not the fact the actual film is not ready to be aired, as slight nutty and eccentric director, Hal Wiedmann (Walken) is not prepared to show it yet.
Que lots of dramas and manic situations as the couple try to co exist while hating each other, not helped by the problem of Eddie falling for Gwen's sister/assistant Kiki (Roberts)
The Characters ---------------------
I thought this film benefited greatly from having such a string and well known cast. Although the script and story are slightly hot and miss in places, at least the acting was up to a decent standard.
John Cusack plays the heart broken, confused and slightly mental role very well, to be honest there are by no means any oscars to be won here but a believable enough performance.
Catherine Zeta-Jones playing a self centered, egotistical character is nothing we haven't seen before, but none the less, I really enjoyed her character, in the love to hate her kind of way.
Julia Roberts was a breath of fresh air I felt in this movie, I like her as an actress and it was nice to see her play a like-able role and get the man in the end of the film.
Comic relief comes from the characters Hector (Azaria) and Weidmann (Walken) two very talented men, who I adore and had me laughing throughout the film.
So was it actually any good? --------------------------------------
I enjoyed the film as something to shove on that doesn't involve too much brain power to watch. It was rather funny and some of the one liners had me cracking up. There is a sweet romantic story in there somewhere and I would probably watch it again, but not anytime soon. (Probably explains why I didn't remember it from last time)
I think most people will find something they like in this film and enjoy it on a basic level.
Conclusion ----------------
As I mentioned before, a simple to watch bit of tosh for numbing the brain after a long day at work. Enjoyable enough for 3 pounds!
I think the 12 rating is suited and anyone above that would enjoy it.
