America - Live In Central Park (Wide Screen)

Advantages: Can be appreciated on many levels
Disadvantages: Peppard's character is underused

...Watching this film, it became apparent to me that Audrey Hepburn is the most beautiful woman ever to have lived. Even with a silly fringe. This film works on so many levels. Superficially it is a charming love story. It is also a fascinating look at New York, with the central character who's career is shrouded in mystery (is she or isn't she a call girl?) as well as her entire life, the lead male who is definitely a gigolo of sorts as well as being a novelist, a mafia don in prison, a model, the ninth richest man in America and the curious upstairs neighbour played to perfection by Mickey Rooney (but what are THOSE pictures she talked to him about?). It is wonderful to see how all these people interact, but Hepburn is fascinating as the young woman who seems innocence personified but is actually acutely aware "They haven't had snow... ...The films starts promisingly enough in the style of a darkly comic, anti-war satire, but blows its cover halfway through to become your typical, heavy-handed Hollywood flick with a conscience. When the rebels appear, and our heroes have to make a choice between the gold and the lives of their new-found charges (obviously they choose the latter), you almost expect a climax involving Clooney turning to his comrades and imparting, South Park style, "You know what? I've learned something today...!" Despite its descent into cheese, the film does have some refreshing touches, refusing to label the Iraqi soldiers as simply "the enemy", more as fully-rounded human beings. ...As a documentary of Bruce Lee's life, this movie probably rates no higher than a C (just take a look at the "goofs" list), but as a testament to Bruce Lee's charisma and will to succeed, it's a solid A. The filmmakers and Bruce's widow, Linda Lee Caldwell, clearly want to portray him in a positive light, but even if you look past the hokier fictional scenes, there's still a remarkable life to witness. Jason Scott Lee and Lauren Holly are an appealing couple, and the supporting cast is solid. It's a peculiar mix: cartoonish kung-fu fight scenes, social commentary as Bruce fights racism to gain acceptance in white America, and most of all the central love story between Bruce and Linda, but together it makes for an entertaining and uplifting movie that I'm fairly certain will please just about any crowd....
