This live-action/computer-animated update of Ross Bagdasarian's squeaky-voiced cartoon characters finds the chipmunks (in CGI form) transported from their woodland habitat to the...
more...city, where they wind up in the home of Dave Seville (Jason Lee). Dave, a down-on-his-luck songwriter, realises the potential of a singing chipmunk pop act, and becomes an unlikely mentor/father figure to feisty Alvin, brainy Simon, and dopey Theodore. Meanwhile, the threesome causes chaos in his life, leading to plenty of fun, frenetic scenarios. When a devious record executive (David Cross) enters the picture, however, Alvin and the Chipmunks must deal with both the trappings of fame and their loyalty to the amiable, hapless Dave.
Directed by Tim Hill (GARFIELD - A TALE OF TWO KITTIES), ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS simultaneously modernises and pays tribute to the classic title characters, who first appeared in the late 1950s and became wildly popular in the '60s. While Lee (MY NAME IS EARL) is well cast as the perpetually exasperated Dave, Long (DIE HARD 4.0) steals the show as the voice of Alvin, who provides the group's lively spirit.

Going anywhere is so expensive these days we decided to get a DVD, some of the main ones we fancied weren't available so we opted for the light hearted 'Alvin and the Chipmunks'

The film is like a feature length version of the old TV kids series but with much better (CGI) animation. The three talking chipmunks Alvin (voiced by Justin Long), Simon (voiced by Matthew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (voiced by live in a tree (as chipmunks do), sadly this gets cut down and taken to LA. Once there they flee there tree and hide in the office of a record company.

There they manage to sneak into the bag of struggling singer / song writer Dave Seville (whose voice is provided by Jason Lee) who unwittingly transports him them to his apartment.

Not long after he gets over the shock of having 3 talking chipmunks in his house, he discovers they can sing and so a partnership develops. Dave writes the songs and Alvin and the boys sings them. This is a winning combination and soon they Chipmunks are superstars whilst being managed by Ian (Dan Cross) a greedy, underhanded manager who makes Dave look mean and boring whilst actually fleecing the boys.

As with all my film reviews I won't spoil the end. The film is a good easy watch, there is plenty of comedy provided by the contrasting characters of the Chipmunks, Alvin being the trendy go getter, Simon the extremely intelligent one and Theodore the plain stupid once. Add this to the Dave and his love interest, Claire then you have all the necessary components.

Add this to the cuteness of the chipmunks and there funny high-pitched voices and there falsetto singing of great tunes as Daniel Powters 'Bad Day', 'Witch Doctor' and 'I love Rock and Roll' plus many others then you get a very watchable movie
