Writer-director Cameron Crowe brings the 1970s music scene to life with his semiautobiographical story of a teen journalist who goes on the road with a rock band. Uncool...
more...15-year-old William Miller (Patrick Fugit) is living every teenager's dream. He's touring with Stillwater, an up-and-coming rock band featuring lead singer Jeff Bebe (Jason Lee) and charismatic lead guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and writing about it for Rolling Stone magazine, whose editors are unaware of his young age. Though Miller's mentor, legendary rock critic Lester Bangs portrayed with humor and heart by Philip Seymour Hoffman cautions him not to befriend the musicians, Miller takes it a step further and befriends both the band and the Band-Aids the girls who hang around with the band because they love the music. Newcomer Fugit is the perfect William Miller: baby-faced, slightly gawky, and an awestruck observer. Kate Hudson sparkles as Penny Lane, the leader of the Band-Aids, and Frances McDormand delivers a stellar performance as Elaine, Miller's protective and mildly paranoid mother. In the tradition of SAY ANYTHING and JERRY MAGUIRE, Crowe's coming-of-age tale is intelligent, well written, and infused with humor in unlikely places.

This is a terrific film with a great cast of actors. Patrick Fugit turns in a subtle, realistic portrayal of the teen who, feeling out of place among his contemporaries in high school, pursues his dream of being a rock writer. Kate Hudson, while overly dramatic at times, fits the bill as the rock chick with a lust for life, and lead singers, while Jason Lee turns in a terrific comedic performance as the egotistic lead singer of fictional band Stillwater. It is Billy Crudup who provides the insightful portrayal of the talented guitarist coming to terms with his relationship with the free loving Penny Lane (Hudson) and his friendship with the young William Miller (Patrick Fugit). Exploring themes of celebrity, talent, friendship and love through the eyes of a 15 year-old boy thrown into the decadent world of seventies rock, Almost Famous is a film to be watched over and over again. Anyone who is a fan of classic rock or who lived through the era will love the soundtrack and cultural references!

The dvd comes in two discs, on the first disct the main film along with the option of commentary, and on the second the bonus tracks including interview with Lester Bangs. The special features include director's commentary which, given that the movie is based upon director Cameron Crowe's own childhood experiences as a rock journalist, provide intimate detail and interesting background stories (assisted by his own mother, played by Frances MacDormand in the film). The commentary along is well worth the price of the dvd.

Another excellent feature of the dvd bonus tracks is Crowe's own recommendations of seventies-era albums, a 'must-have' list for all budding muscial critics.
