A very young Tom Cruise plays the role of Stefan Djordjevic who is a school boy dreaming of winning a football scholarship so he can move away from his small town and make something of himself. He hates the thought of being stuck in his town an working at the blast furnaces like his Dad and brother.
Stefan is happy with some parts of his life as he has a nice girlfriend but she is not willing to have sex with him so this is frustrating him slightly. She is very supportive of his dream of moving away to college and becoming an engineer. The crucial match is due at school with several college scouts attending to see who is good enough to get a scholarship but the match does not go to plan and in the last few seconds the team loose. After the match Stefan sticks up for his team mate who the coach blames for the team loosing and he ends up getting kicked off the team with only one match to go before the end of the season.
Will the see the end of Stefan’s dreams of getting his scholarship and getting out of his small town or is he destined to have a life just like his father and brother, also will the Coach get his dream job or did the game they lost also cost him his chance of getting away?
Well the film did have quite a good storyline but I think that it was spoilt with the silly side story of Stefan trying to get his long term girlfriend to have sex with him, they were also always snogging around school and this for me was really off putting and did actually make the film slightly childish and daft. I understand that this sib what teenagers go through but it really was not necessary for the storyline. I think that Tom Cruise did take to his part and played it well. I found he did come across as very genuine on screen and at times I was feeling very sorry for him and just wanted to see him get his dream. He worked well with Lea Thompson who played the role of his girlfriend and they had a good on screen chemistry.
There were a lot of supporting actors in this film but the one who really stood out for me was Craig T Nelson who played the role of the coach. He came across as a very tough man who would not take any nonsense from the team but he at times also showed a softer and caring side when he was with his family, I liked how this was done and thought it came across very well and gave the character a little bit of depth.
The film was set in the early 1980’s and this was very apparent from the clothes which the characters wore and also the shots we had of the town and the jobs which the people were doing. This film was shot in 1982 so not much time or effort would have been needed when making this film. There were no really effects to talk of in this film. I think that looking back now then this film is very dated but it would still stand up if re made now with different actors and slight adjustments to the script. The music throughout the film was good but nothing very memorable and I did find it was appropriate for the places which it was used.
One thing which I must mention is that we do get to see a naked Tom Cruise in this film but for some reason this did not work for me, I think this is because he looks so young in the film!
The DVD which we have does have a few bonus features which include:-
Theatrical trailers Interactive menus Scene Selection
I really can not see how these are classed as special features on the DVD as there s nothing extra added there.
The running time of this film is 86 minutes and found this to be quite long enough and the certificate is a 15. I do agree with this certificate as there is a lot of swearing, one naked scene and also a lot of sexual references included. We bought this well over a year ago n an offer for 2 DVD’s for £5 from Morrison’s. I am sure this will be available on places like Amazon and EBay for just a few pounds.
Overall I am glad that I managed to sit and watch the whole thing. It does improve after the first 20 or so minutes but for me it was not quite good enough to make me want to recommend it or even watch it again. I am not going to recommend this film unless you are desperate!
Advantages: Good directing and acting Disadvantages: Weak plot
...Tom Cruise plays an all american sports star very well. The innocence and arroagnce of youth comes forward very well in his portrayal of Stefen. Craig T Nelson is the hard nosed coach aiming for promotion, and Lea Thompson provides the love interest. The supporting cast give a solid but unmemorable performance, as Cruise and Nelson command the screen. Their on screen tussle as coach and player is very well directed and acted.
My Opinion
I found ... ...is the acting, but I feel the plot doesn't really have that much that is impressive about it. The tale of a high school footballer aspiring to a football scholarship whilst suffering with his family is familiar as a script, and this story is no surprise. The music is rather cheesy, as is typical of this era of film.
Conclusion
An enjoyable film, though not impressive.
I rate this film at 3 stars out of 5.

varied and keeps you motivated to keep going. It is useful that it is in sections, as you need to be quite fit to stick it all out!
I do struggle to get it allright, and am often just throwing myself about any old how, but I know with practise the moves will get easier.
I would recommend this dvd to anyone who likes this sort of music, as it really kept me going hearing all the great music.
I couldn't believe the shape of all the ladies (do they even know what a thigh looks like??) but it acts more as a motivator, than as an annoyance.
There are a section of extras : five music videos and a Behind the scenes featurette. ...
Advantages: Lots of practice clips to test yourself, clear and easy to understand. Disadvantages: No booklet, try to sell you other products in the Introduction.
session holds a short introduction, and then you are shown three interactive video clips - similar to those shown when you take the hazard perception test for real. You are able to watch each video clip and press the ok/enter button when you see hazards occuring. After each clip you will be given a score out of five. The clip will then be repeated with a commentary explaining where the hazards were. The aim of the practice sessions are to allow you to test what you have learned without having to go through a long series of clips. This way you get quick feedback on how you are doing, and what you got wrong (or right!). It is suggested that you complete all of the Practice sessions before moving on to the Exam section.

DVD Description
Stefan (Tom Cruise) is determined to leave the sleepy Pennsylvania mining town of Ampipe where he is growing up. An exceptional athlete, Stef sees football as his ticket out. His pursuit of a scholarship, however, brings him at odds with his combative coach (Craig T. Nelson). While rebelling against his coach and the town, Stef takes up with Lisa Litski (Lea Thompson), an attractive schoolmate and talented saxophone player. Cruise graduated to leading man status with this film, one of many early 1980s pictures with strong teen identities. His sexy, defiant presence carries the film. First time director Michael Chapman (cinematographer of TAXI DRIVER and many other films) proves himself especially adept in capturing the intense football sequences.
