Advantages: very good script, acting, direction, pace, atmosphere Disadvantages: sound quality, needs repeat viewings, main stars perhaps too "beautiful" to be hacks
...But in this movie it's all boys talk, no subplots, no love interests just pure history telling at the highest level.
But its not just the leads that carry the film. The support is just too good not to mention - Hal Holbrook as the anonymous Deep Throat - an insider within the WhiteHouse who gives Redford tips & trails to follow; the late Jason Robards as the Kennedy-loving Ben Bradlee, editor of the Washington Post; and special mention must go to ... ...smooth paced direction Pakula makes all the pieces of the jigsaw slip into place at a very approachable level. Some thought & concentration is still required from the viewer but after perhaps a couple of repeat viewings one should be able to learn more & more of the reasons behind the downfall.
And of course it should be noted that Watergate wasn't the main reason for Nixon's resignation although it was a major factor. For a more rounded account ...

Advantages: Good acting, good pace and interesting story Disadvantages: The ending!
...on as such here. All I will say is that there was a burglary at the Watergate hotel and it transpired that the burglary was covering up a bugging mission. The Democrat committee was being watched. Nixon denied all knowledge but it emerged he was behind the scandal. He resigned in 1974. The film stream-lines these events for clarity. Anyone wanting to read more can go to www.watergate.info/
What about the film?
Well, Hoffman and Redford play Washington ... ...all good investigative journalists, the two men followed the money to see where it would lead. Of course, in 1972 the Washington Post reported that a $25,000 cashier's cheque, apparently earmarked for the Nixon campaign, ended up in the bank account of a Watergate burglar. After persistently calling everyone they felt was involved and getting ignored or even getting retractions of previous statements, the two finally wrote their full report of the ...

Advantages: Real story. Disadvantages: Makes too many asumptions.
Those of us that are old enough remember the events of Watergate, because of the enormous implications it had for the government of the United States and for Richard Nixon in particular, will enjoy this film. What this film portrays is how the dogged determination of two reporters from the Washington Post newspaper brought the facts of massive corruption and wrong doing into the public domain. Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Burnstein (Dustin ... ...draw together a whole string of pieces of information to produce the whole Watergate story. Because I knew the story and the outcome, following the film was not difficult and it still kept my interest as I tried to determine where the next twist would be. However, the film does assume a lot of prior knowledge of Watergate and my eldest son found the plot confusing because he did not know the final outcome. The end of the film is very strange as just ...

Advantages: Plot, subtle Disadvantages: Perhaps drags a bit
...are too scared to help. All this against a lack of assistance from the authorities. If you want a fast action drama, don't watch this. The action unfolds slowly, over just more than two hours, but it is all gripping. But you do need to concentrate. There is a lot of talking, all of which is important. Perhaps towards the end it drags a bit, as they visit yet more witnesses, but it is a film that does need to be seen as the plot is so good. ...
