low-key unpolished and deeply-felt screen adaptation of the Erich Maria Remarque anti-war novel has lost little of its original impact. Years after its release it was still being banned in countries mobilizing for war. The plot follows a group of young German recruits in World War I through their passage from idealism to disillusionment. As the central character Paul Baumer (Lew Ayres) declares, We live in the trenches and we fight. We try not to be killed - that's all. All Quiet is an anthology of now famous scenes: Ayres trapped in a shell crater with a man he has killed; the first meeting of the recruits and the veterans; infantrymen being mowed down to machine-gun visual rhythms; a moonlight swim with French farm girls; Ayres' pacifist speech to his astonished schoolmates; and the final shot of the soldier's hand reaching for a fatal butterfly.

schoolboys idealistic and inflamed with youthful patriotism set off to fight in the "glorious" war. During their brutal basic training disenchantment begins. Then boarding a train for the front they see the wounded being rushed back to the hospitals and they begin to grasp the grim reality of war. On their first night in action they come under heavy attack. In the trenches they begin to fall. Their youth is stripped away by the violence and the boys become as sullen as veterans. When Paul shoots a Frenchman and watches him die he realizes the futility of war. Wounded he returns home to a different world a place where he cannot fit in. Sent back into battle he meets destiny on a day when the German High Command states simply "All Quiet on the Western Front". Winner of 2 Oscars in 1930 for Best Picture and Best Director.

The story is told by a young 'unknown soldier' in the trenches of Flanders during the First World War. Through his eyes we see all the realities of war; under fire on patrol waiting in the trenches at home on leave and in hospitals and dressing stations. Although there are vividly described incidents which remain in mind there is no sense of adventure here only the feeling of youth betrayed and a deceptively simple indictment of war - of any war - told for a whole generation of victims.

* * * * * I'm doing lots of World War 1 literature for my English A-level. But among all the videos, poems, biographies, and documentaries, this is one of my favourites. 'All Quiet on the Western Front' first grabbed my attention because it sounds so poetic, so familiar. However the deepest irony is that the front was never quiet, constantly bashed into craters by heavy shell-fire.
Before this DVD (a 1979 remake of the classic black and white film) I had no idea what the trenches were really like. What is somewhat unique is that this story is seen from the German perspective. What is heartwarming and depressing is that it is very much like our own story on the allied side.
This is based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque and tells the story of a class of German boys, fresh out of school who troop off to 'glorious war' and find a world of rats and mud and gas attacks. Paul Baumer tells the story. He is played by Richard Thomas who also played John-Boy Walton in 'The Waltons' which is a bit distracting.
I read some other reviews which seemed to think that this film missed out a lot of the original novel. I would therefore say for people wanting authenticity to read the book instead. However, judging the film on its own merits I found it adequately horrific, the flashbacks emotive but not over-sentimental, and the friendship between the main characters in the trench amazing to see amidst the horrors of war on both sides.
Most striking are horrible moments such as when a boy new to the war falls down a crater into the gas, leaving their captain repeating the phrase "He was only a baby". Shell-shock is again very well portrayed. The characters were memorable and 3-dimensional. But if you were watching for entertainment value I would suggest a more recent film, as this one lacks the kind of special effects, 'bangs' and action that made "Saving Private Ryan" and "Black Hawk Down" such sucessful films.

* * * * * In conclusion, this is a good film. However, it isn't what would interest everybody, and some people may find it depressing as the war goes on and on for several years, and as hinted on the front cover not everyone survives.
"THEY LEFT FOR WAR AS BOYS NEVER TO RETURN AS MEN"
Remake of the all-time great war story based on the pacifist novel by Erich Maria Remarque. The tragic tale of a group of German recruits during World War I. A tough, unromantic story, told from the viewpoint of the ordinary German soldier in the trenches.

DVD Description
Richard Thomas stars as Paul Baumer, a teen who, at the urging of zealously patriotic teacher Kantorek (Donald Pleasence) enthusiastically enlists to fight for Germany in WWI, accompanied by several school friends. After training at the hands of the sadistic Corporal Himmelstoss (Ian Holm), Paul and his friends head for the front. There, they discover that war is a bloody, deadly business, although they are heartened by the presence of their commander, wily veteran Stanislaus Katczinsky (Ernest Borgnine). ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT is one of the most respected anti-war novels ever written. Though a 1930 film adaptation by Lewis Milestone was widely beloved by fans of cinema and the source material, Delbert Mann's TV production was well received, earning a Golden Globe and Emmys for Borgnine and Patricia Neal.
