I thought I would write this review in two parts - a before and after, if you will.
Part 1 *****
Now… as I write these particular words I have yet to see the film in question - I aim to give my views later in the review when I have done so… if you know what I mean. I want to educe my enthusiasm - to say that I am actually looking forward to this movie, have done since I knew it was being released. I have heard many terrible reviews on this film, as it was a waste of time and… yes, I know it's mostly about making a few bucks, of squeezing a few extra quid from the alien franchise but… you know what? I don't really care about that at all. There is something about the alien films, the Predator films and the A v P films that keeps me interested. Can't put my finger on it really…
It did not cost me much and I see that it is already is in most shops' 'bargain bins.' I actually bought it from Ebay for £5.85 (including P & P). I have been looking out for a decent price for a while, as I don't believe in paying over a tenner for a movie, which this film was selling for recently.
So what is AVPR and what is it all about? Well, most of you will have heard of Alien and perhaps you might have enacted the scene where John Hurt holds onto his stomach in pain before a newly born alien shoots from his gut? If not, well Alien first hit the screens in 1979 and was directed by Britain's Ridley Scott. On the way back to earth, the space-tug Nostromo gets a distress signal from a nearby planet. They go to investigate and unfortunately bring on board an alien embryo after the Hurt character is smothered by a 'Face Hugger.' One by one, the alien (which bleeds acid) picks off the crew members and only Warrant Officer Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) survives. This particular film spawned three (up to now) sequels, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. Check out the Qualrilogy box set, very good with lots of Extras!
An alien is a very tough creature to defeat. It is sly and sleek, it is quick and as I mentioned it bleeds acid. It usually takes on many of the attributes of the creatures it is born from.
We first saw Predators in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger action film 'Predator.' The Schwarzenegger character lands in a Central American country with his crew of men to save a bunch of hostages, only to be pitted against an invisible attacker. A quick and clever hunter, the Predator slowly kills and skins his men and it is with equal cunning, along with a bit of luck that Schwarzenegger's character escapes unhurt. There was one stand alone sequel to this, Predator 2.
Alien versus Predator (AVP) pitted both against each other. A lot of people did not like this film and thought it was a waste of time, but within it's plot it was revealed that the Predators bred the aliens so that they could hunt them down as sport. I did not mind AVP - I though the end was corny, but it still held lots of the claustrophobia of the first films, of things in the dark, and creatures ready to pounce…

I have stalled at writing this part of the review for a while as I tried to decide whether I liked this movie or not. I will say one thing, though, and that it is not as bad as several people have made it out to be. Directed by the brothers Colin and Greg Strause, who are probably more known for their visual effects in films such as 'X-Men,' and written by Armageddon's screenwriter Shane Salerno, AVPR is not an awful film. However, it begins extremely dark, with lots of hard to see action, where you just don't know what is going on. After this initial confusion, it races along just fine.
Starring '24's' Reiko Aylesworth and Steve Pasquale of 'Rescue Me' fame, the characters are quite believable and have believable lives of their own, which are suddenly shattered as their small town is hit by the Aliens. The army person coming home, the guy coming out of jail and trying to go straight, the boy in love with a girl in high school… The actual acting, though, is quite wooden at times. And this is sad.
But on the whole, AVPR is a slasher movie with aliens, really. There is so much blood and death. And like all slasher movies, you are just waiting for and guessing at who will be next to be killed and how this will happen. The actual Predator struggles a bit, though, and you wonder why they did not send more down to destroy the aliens.
You are left wondering 'why,' though. Why have they bothered? Okay, it is not bad, but it does not add anything new to the Alien/Predator story. Visually, with a few beers after a hard day at work, when you don't want to think too deeply about plot and such forth, this is okay…

=====================
I've loved the Alien films for a long time and despite quite a few poor reviews I liked the first AVP film. At the end of the last film it was clear that they had left it open for a sequel with the infected predator giving birth to a alien/predator cross breed (as we all know Aliens take on the form of their hosts).
The predators ship with mutant alien on board crashes in the only place it's possible ... ...of hosts to infect the aliens can have a field day. Their only problem is one predator who comes to sort things out when he gets wind of what's happened, he is the fly in the ointment. Let the battle commence.
Conclusion
==========
Despite the poor reviews I was quite looking forward to this film and still had high hopes. I think the last films reviews were a little harsh. However this film really does not stand up well. In fact it falls down ...

...an effort to destroy the Aliens who crash-landed on the planet. Unfortunately for him, the Aliens have multiplied like rabbits, and a single mutant Predator/Alien has become… dozens.
'AVP2' is, without a doubt, the worst sequel in a series that was, until now, Sci-Fi entertainment at its best. There is absolutely no analogy to be made - 'AVP2' was this year's biggest disappointment for Sci-Fi fans.
The greatest sin committed against the series ... ...killing only worthy opponents - Aliens or humans toting weapons. In the last movie 'AVP', the fighting camaraderie that was displayed between the last surviving human and the Predator came as a surprise - because fans of Predator had never actually considered the possibility that the Predators possessed feelings… or were able to express them. When the Predator marked Alexa Woods (the only surviving human from the last film) with the symbol of a Predator ...

NO, no, no, no, NO, no, NOOOOO!!!
I could really end the review there, but how would that be helpful to you? Answer? It wouldn't. It might give you an indication of my frustration, but not in terms of why.
Let me explain. Take Alien, and Aliens, and Alien 3, and even to a certain extent the fourth Alien film. They all had one common appealing factor: the Alien, right? Right! Take Predator. Okay, not so much Predator 2. It wasn't Danny Glover's ... ...Let's combine the two legendary sci-fi alien villains, and make a film, pit them against each other, and call it AVP (Alien vs Predator).
Okay, so I thought this was a great idea, and watched it, all the way through, and hated the fact that they tried to build this around a bit of a plot, focusing on the people instead of the two 80s action aliens. What with public agreement that it wasn't targeted properly, you'd think that they would make a bit ...

Advantages: Ok if its the unrated cut Disadvantages: Poor theatrical version
Expectations were high for this movie with the way the previous one ended and this let us down. Big Time! Apart from a PredAlien Queen & the whip weapon there is nothing new in this film. It borrows very heavily from the plots of Aliens, Predator, Resident Evil & The Return of the Living Dead.
We start where the last film left off with the Predalien chest-buster which causes the ship to crash, all the Predators on board are killed by the Predalien. ... ...their thing on the local people of the town where the ship crash lands.
It was pretty obvious as the only one of it's kind that the Predalien was going to turn out to be a Queen (that's what it's doing to the pregnant woman in the hospital, you see the eggs going down her throat). Basically we're following a towns battle for survival and a Predator's hunt of a new species for a trophy. We have a mum who is also a soldier with her daughter (which ...

...crappy teenage horror flick with aliens and predators thrown into the mix. Gone is the PG rating of the previous movie; this time we see a young boy being facially raped by a parasitoid, and, later, a pregnant woman's belly expanding after being injected with a triple of alien babies. That's not exhilarating; rather, it's bloody disgusting (and this is coming from a man who adores violence). With characters so annoying that we don't really give a ... ...a pathetic attempt to echo the credibility of the very first Alien film), and lighting so dark that we can't seem to figure out what the hell is going on, AVP2, overall, is about as stale as your Great Grandmother's fruitcake, without any of the raisins left in. It pains me to say it, but the much loved Alien and Predator franchises are well and truly dead. For God's sake, don't make another one. ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Aliens Vs Predator - Requiem (DVD)"
Advantages: A single amusing line. Disadvantages: An absence of suspense, huge plot holes, wooden acting, dodgy effects and shoddy direction.
spends much of the film deafening the audience with loud brass and drum themes that might be exciting if the action was as flashy. But generally the arrangements overpower the film with an excess of brass and string stabs and overdone horror themes that rely heavily on creepy thin strings. The most effective aspect of the score is the use of heartbeat-imitating drums for the Predator's hunts.
"AlienVsPredator - Requiem" is undermined by lacklustre direction and an absence of suspense. If the directors had spent half as much time on pushing their actors to breathe life into their characters as they had on creating shoddy physical props, this could have been something of a guilty pleasure. But an inability to fill the many plot holes (like why the Predator is destroying all evidence of the Aliens' presence) on top of the abysmal writing ...
Advantages: Aliens made of cardboard (and thats an advantage) Disadvantages: I saw it
There are three really highly anticipated movies for 2008 Cloverfield has had people riled up since the summer (anyone not familiar with monster movie Cloverfield see me after class), after nearly a 20 year absence Indiana Jones returns in The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull; and finally AlienVs. Predator: Requiem. Now I know your thinking "HELLO" maybe even screaming it aloud, I'm certainly glad I'm not beside you. But AVP2 (AlienVsPredator 2 - this is the second movie in the series) or rather the production company behind it 20th Century Fox started advertising the upcoming movie Christmas 2006, for actual publicity perspective and I'm talking trailers this could well be the most lengthy publicity vehicle we have ever seen.

is just one cliche after another. Alien and Predator hybrid (could have been a great idea) crashes on Earth with a Predator hot on its heels, clearing up any evidence it leaves behind (no idea why, they dont do anything as silly as make that clear).
Small town America where everyone knows each other from the 'troubled teen' (who is about 36) to the local sheriff, is somehow transformed into a big city when we see the lights go out in the powercut - another thing that seems to be in the film for the sole purpose of making it even more annoying and harder to watch.
It was frankly painful to watch, if you have any affection for either the Alien or Predator films (or any films really) I advise you to avoid this drivel. ...

It may not be classic sci-fi like the original Alien, which it has in its DNA, but it's a perfectly respectable next step in the series (New York Times, 07/01/2008)
[T]he filmmakers reveal a cheeky willingness to upend genre conventions, particularly when bending the rules regarding who lives and who dies in this sort of pic (Variety, 07/01/2008)
DVD Description
ALIEN VS PREDATOR relegated its intergalactic grudge match to Antarctica, keeping most of humankind gleefully ignorant. This time around, though, the destruction takes place in suburban America and facehuggers, alien hybrids, and the dreadlocked Predator wreak havoc. Directors Colin and Greg Strause (billed as 'The Brothers Strause') use their visual effects backgrounds to create a steady stream of monsters, gore, and goo. Picking up where AVP ended, REQUIEM sees Predator on a homebound spacecraft when a baby alien/Predator hybrid bursts from his chest, causing the ship to crash in the Colorado woods. Several facehugger specimens escape, planting eggs down the throats of a hunter and his son. Soon, baby aliens emerge from their bodies and head for town, where ex-con Dallas (Steven Pasquale), Iraq War vet Kelly (Reiko Aylesworth), pizza delivery boy Ricky (Johnny Lewis), high school heartthrob Jesse (Kristen Hager), and sheriff Morales (John Ortiz) have their own separate encounters with the creatures. The dead Predator's home planet receives a transmission of the alien outbreak, and a fellow denizen of his world is dispatched to clean up the multiplying aliens, eventually causing enough death and destruction for government intervention. Fans of the comic books and videogames will appreciate the Strauses' adherence to the lore of the series, but others will probably just find thrills in the copious special effects, which are frequent and of a high standard.
