Alien was huge horror sci-fi hit. The director Ridely Scott created something that changed how aliens were seen forever. No longer human-like with their own moral code and living standards. He presented us with an alien that was hell bent on survival and basically killed without question. They were more monsters than aliens, they were living nightmares.
James Cameron takes on the sequel to a movie that many felt could not be followed up. How the critics piled up on the bandwagon, claiming he couldnt possibly match the originals now legendary status. All those doubters most have been soundly silenced when they saw this movie. Not only did he do the original justice, Cameron had created a film to rival it in its genius.
Aliens takes place some time after the original. Ripley is finally found in her escape pod and is now finally in safety. However her tales of the aliens fall on deaf ears. Even moreso when she is told of a thriving human colony on the very planet she claims them to exist. Soon however certain elements believe her story and comission a military team to investigate the threat and to wipe it out. Ripleys as the only person with any experience of the creatures is persuaded to assist the marine assault. The question still remains, if there is alien eggs, who is laying them ?
Cameron does a wonderful job of perserving the look and feel of the original movie, even when introducing new vehicles and settings, everything seems to fit. The suspense from the original is held brilliantly and for the first 40 minutes or so, we dont see a single alien. Yet the movie keeps us intrested and watching every second.
Bringing in marines to deal with the alien threat is another stroke of genius. The first had Ripley and her fellow crew members out of their depth and with no real weaponary against a sole alien. These guys are far from shy using their vast arsenal of weapons and what an arsenal it is. This time however theres possibly hundreds of them to face. The manner in which the aliens deal with this threat is wonderful. Their nest is perfect camoflague and only when they move at times are they even visable from the backround.
The style and tension built around the marines unable to see aliens but their scanners reporting dozens moving all around them is a wonderful touch. Again Ripley is the only one who seemingly has a clear head on what has to be done. Nuke the lot of them from orbit. But the company has other ideas as to what the alien has to offer. The conflict between the miltary and company intrests is a great one as the milatary seems hell bent on eradicating this creature.
This also allows the action element of the movie added with brilliant effect. James Cameron is a wonderful action movie director and this is no exception. Brilliant fight scenes and all seeming fit nicely into the alien style.
The most brilliant addition to this movie is the alien queen. Intimadating in presence rather than in sleathy manner of the average alien. Clearly she is the intelligence behind the alien hive and of course the source of the alien eggs. The showdown between her and Ripley is obviously inevitable.
The characters of this movie are played strongly, from the more nervy and negative marines right down to the stronger willed.Sean Bein amongst the great marine performances. Sigorny Weaver excells as Ripley once again. Now seemingly hardened by her past experience in some ways but in others ever fearful of becoming a host to the creatures.
This movie holds the suspense, drama and originality that made the first so strong. It developes the story much deeper and brings us further into the horrors of the alien world. A magnificent sequel that is arguably better than the orginal, a rare time any movie can stir that sort of debate.

Advantages: More violence, fire power and bleeding than the first Disadvantages: Dated 1986, special effects dont seem good compared to todays special effects, but great for the time
Advantages: great, fun movie, excellent C.G effects and loads of extras!!!!! Disadvantages: a little tame on the gore and violence factor compared to the previous films!
