Aliens is the sequel to the Ridley Scott 1978 film Alien, the story follows on from the last film with Ellen Ripley(and the ginger cat Jones) in hyper sleep aboard the commercial ship Nostromos escape pod. Some 57 years have passed, the pod is discovered in deep space by accident and Ripley is taken to a gateway station where she has to attend an inquest into why the Nostromo ship was destoyed and why all of the crew are missing. Because there is no evidence of Alien beings aboard the ship, Ripley's account of events are not belived and she has her license as a Commercial Flight Officer suspended permantely. It is at the end of the inquest that she is told a colony of between sixty to seventy families have been living on planet LV-426 for more than 20 years (this is the planet that they discovered the alien ship on the 1st film) and to make matters worse Ripley discovers that her daughter, Amanda
had died two years earlier at the grand old age of 66. Powerless and suffering from nightmares and possibly some kind of mental breakdown, Ripley finds work in the cargo docks, that is anyway until Carter Burke(he works for Weyland,Yutani. Corp which is the company that setup the colony on LV-426) informs her that they have lost contact with the colony on the planet and they would like her along with the colonial Marines to go to the planet to find out what has happened. Ripley freaks out and refuses to go even though Burke offers to have her Flight Officer License reinstated. Ripley has yet another nightmare after which she agrees to go on the condition that they are going to LV-426 to destroy the aliens. When Ripley joins the Colonial Marines she at first isolates herself and has a mental fit when she discovers one of the team member is an android (I think i would myself if one had attempted to kill me). The marines are typical macho's who think they are invincible and do not take Ripley and her threat about the aliens seriously; they are completely unprepared for what they may be up against.
The colonists on LV-246 are terror formers and planet engineers who are sent there to set up atmoshere processors to make the air breathable, the colony is called Hapleys Hope and the population is 158. When they arrive on LV-426 the place is totally desolate, the inside of the colony has serious damage but no sign of life, they come across a young girl, Newt. Ripley automatically becomes her protector and they develop a really strong bond. All the people on the colony have transmitters surgically installed which helps the marines to track them down to underneath the pressing station, expecting the colonists to be gathered together, the marines are shocked to discover that all the colonists are in fact dead or being used as hosts for the alien embryo's. It is in this point of the film that all hell breaks loose! Needless to say the marines begin to taken Ripley seriously and they arrange to be picked up from the colony by the drop ship in order to get back to the mothership and nuke planet LV-426 in to next week. It is at this point that Burke orders then not to do it as the atmosphere processor is worth millions, but Ripley informs him that it is a military operation so he has no authority. Unfortunately the drop ship that is coming to collect them has an alien aboard which kills the driver and the ship crashes before Ripley and the marines manage to make there escape. Feeling quite isolated and doomed Ripley and Co set up a base within the colony and try to figure a way out of the situation. Aliens has real a real Vietnam element to it(hi tech war against low tech enemy) James Cameron who was a production designer before he became a director took a keen role in re designing the aliens, he wanted to make the alien suit simpler so that the actors in them were able to concentrate more on there movement which is why you will notice a more life like movement to them in this film. The aliens in this film have 3 fingers as opposed to the 6 in Alien and their craniums have a "ribbed" effect whereas they have a smooth effect in Alien. The alien foetus has arms in this film whereas in Alien it did not..
The design of the alien itself originates from the original design by the Swiss Surrealist Artist H R Giger who created the alien and the alien ship for the first film. The reason the alien has two mouths is the inner mouth is in fact its tongue ( Giger thought it was such a vicious creature that even its tongue is dangerous).
James Cameron has decided to take things one step further in this film by introducing a queen alien who produces eggs. Cameron took the idea from ants (warrior and queen ants) therefore creating the mentality that all of the aliens in the film are catching and immobilising humans to impregnate them using the face huggers and therefore insuring the survival of the species.
The queen herself is slightly taller than the warrior aliens (approx 2 - 3 feet) and she has a much larger cranium.
Cameron used 6 alien suits in the film ( in Alien they only used one) and used all kinds of camera tricks to create the illusion of several aliens.
Most of the special effects were created by using minature and life size models, for example the minature model of the colony was constructed over an entire soundstage at pinewood studios, for the minature queen alien they needed 50 cables to perform the complicated movements she was designed to execute.
Cameron also brough alot of hi tech equipment to the story for example the motion trackers, endless weapons and of course the cargo loader, all of which were essential to the story.
The soundtrack to the film was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and it was written by James Horner.
The basic story of the film revolves around Ripley, although she survived the first film she has not survived the experience mentally and is therefore on the verge of a breakdown in this film. When she meets Newt they bond because they are so similar, they are both surviviors and perhaps because she discovered that her daughter had died Ripley is subconsciously trying to fill a void. Her relationship with corporal Hicks is quite interesting as he tries to protect her and she learns to trust him. The most annoying character by far is Carter Burke who is intent on gaining an alien specimin and will go to any lengths to get one.
The main question you might ask is why on earth would Ripley go back? She was obviously quite traumatised by the first experience and if I was in her position you would never get me back on that planet again for any amount of money. I think she went back to face her fear, when she had the nightmare she knew she would never get over it so she decided to end it once and for all by ensuring the aliens are destroyed.
Overall I really liked the film, it was full of action, suspense and the one thing I really liked about the film was the fact that there were more aliens and Cameron has attempted to show us reasoning behind the aliens and what they do, the Marine characters were at first annoying but towards the end of the film I really did begin to like them.
The film has a good story (I especially liked the way that Newt called Ripley mummy at the end of the film), interesting characters, a good soundtrack and all of the actors are very convincing ( Sigourney Weaver was nominated for the Oscar as Best Actress for this film in 1986). The special effects in this film ( taking into account the age) were good and overall it was a really enjoyable experience.
The DVD itself has a really nice looking menu and the picture has been digitally mastered so it is sharp and clear. The only downside to the DVD was I thought there could have been more special features but I guess you cant win them all.
Make sure you watch the interview with James Cameron as it is really interesting and at one point in the interview when referring to Ellen Ripley the interviewer calls her Ridley, well let's just say if looks could kill.......

Advantages: Excellent presentation of the film itself in terms of both image and sound; comprehensive photo gallery; interesting interview with James Cameron. Disadvantages: No Director’s Commentary; only one trailer included; no music audio options — essentially, this is not an extras-lite DVD, but it simply has nowhere near as much content as the Alien DVD it follows.
Advantages: great, fun movie, excellent C.G effects and loads of extras!!!!! Disadvantages: a little tame on the gore and violence factor compared to the previous films!
