It would be easy to argue, as indeed it has been in the past, that Alien was little more than a haunted house film set in outer space. I think thats a little harsh, but I take the point because the emphasis was on suspense and it did do that job oh so well utilising many of the elements from such movies. The same could not be said about Aliens though. Yes we keep the suspense of the original, well maybe watered down slightly, but we also add some truly awesome action to the mix as well. A winning combination surely.
Well, for me, I think its simply brilliant. I ahve seen this movie scores of times and I never get bored. It starts off where the original ended. Ripley cast herself adrift from the stricken Nostromo after her initial encounter with the Alien lifeform destroyed her crew. We begin with a salvage team discovering the capsule and brining her back to safety. However, she finds that she has been in suspended animation for 50 years, her frineds and family are either dead or have forgotten about her and basially life sucks. Worse still - the Alien planet has been colonised by and Earth has lost contact with the colony. Cue then for Ripley to once more face the alien menace this time accompanied by a rough, tough band of US marines toting impressive weaponary. Yeah!
The alien is a nasty piece of work, one of, if not the toughest movie monster in the history of Hollywood. Here the set is crawling with them and the movie laps it up. It looks awesome and the monster animations are superb, flawless even. Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, is excellent here again and without blathering on too much, you'll find yourself with a movie which has it all. The action is fast and furious, the special effects great, the script and bit too macho, but not excessively so and the acting performances above average for this tpe of movie. This is easily my favourite sci-fi movie and I can't recommend it highly enough. Go rent it, buy it, borrow it or damn well steal it if you have never seen it before before you are missing out on a treat. 5 stars all the way!
