I can't believe there's anybody out there who hasn't seen this movie at least once, so I won't waste too much time describing the plot. Basically, Ripley wakes up after a 50 year hypersleep after narrowly escaping certain death at the hands of a rather nasty predator of the xenomorphic variety, only to go back to the planet where her crew originally picked up this unwelcome passenger, but this time with a group of super tough space marines and a slimey company man at her side.
The suspense and atmosphere work brilliantly even today, especially compared to the hollowed out shell of a movie that is Alien Resurrection. If you're planning to buy a copy on video, try to make it the directors cut edition. As well as the usual scenes that everybody knows an loves, you get some cool ones explaining how the colony became infested with the alien nasties. You actually get to see things like Newt's parents investigating the crashed ship from the first movie, which I feel actually adds a lot to the film. It makes it more coherant.
Something which perhaps makes the Director's cut even more superior to the standard version is that you get to see the doomed colony as it was meant to be, complete with children causing trouble on the command levels, and other little touches like this. I think that ever removing stuff like this was practically a crime, as the contrast it draws with what becomes of the installation makes the film seem all that more dramatic, if you're into that sort of thing.
If you're more interested in blood and gore, then you'll doubtless be pleased to hear that the previously lost scenes also include some EXCELLENT footage of some auto-guns making mincemeat of a group of Aliens.
Whichever version you see, Aliens might not be as atmospheric or original as the first film, but it still puts most modern films, sci-fi or otherwise, to shame. Compare true classics like this to rubbish like Star Wars Epsisode One or The Matrix, and you'll see that film makers have seriously lost their way in recent years. They need to remember that films do not need to be funny, that violence is not a bad thing as long as it is realistic (well, semi-realistic at any rate) and that being trendy and/or cool is not all it's cracked up to be.
In conclusion, the combination of suspense, thrills, scares and action make this film certainly one of, if not the best movies of all time, and ensure that it is almost certain to remain unsurpassed for the forseeable future.
Science Fiction based horror at it's best. It's just a pity that James Cameron has lost his way in recent years and started making sentimental nonsense like Titanic.

Advantages: More violence, fire power and bleeding than the first Disadvantages: Dated 1986, special effects dont seem good compared to todays special effects, but great for the time
Advantages: great, fun movie, excellent C.G effects and loads of extras!!!!! Disadvantages: a little tame on the gore and violence factor compared to the previous films!
