A summer vacation for the Pearson family looks set to be a miserable one with failed exams, family disputes, boring activities and no TV to greet them, along with the surprise arrival of Bethany's irritating boyfriend, Ricky. But the vacation turns into an even worse one when cousins Tom and Jake come across four aliens on the roof who announce that they are going to kill all the humans and take over the world. At first it seems hard to believe that the two-foot tall, cute looking things can be so dangerous, but when they bring out their powerful high-tech weapons and take control of Ricky with a mind control device, the pair realise they are much more menacing than they seem. Gathering the rest of the Pearson children, along with any household items they can pass of as weaponry, the family must battle against the aliens and try to prevent them from getting to the rest of their family and the world.
~ Cast ~ Tom - Carter Jenkins Jake - Austin Robert Butler Bethany - Ashley Tisdale Hannah - Ashley Boettcher Art - Henri Young Lee - Regan Young Ricky - Robert Hoffman Nana - Doris Roberts Stuart - Kevin Nealon Nina - Gillian Vigman Nathan - Andy Richter Skip - Ashley Peldon (voice) Sparks - Josh Peck (voice) Tazer - Thomas Haden Church (voice) Razor - Kari Wahlgren (voice)
The entire cast, which is mostly made up of children, were all superb. The two main characters, played by Carter Jenkins and Austin Robert Butler, were by far the best actors and they led their small team in the war against the aliens with a mixture of brain skills from Tom and brawn skills from Jake. The younger children, sweet Hannah and troublesome twins Art and Lee, completed the team and every single one provided lots of entertainment.
I'm sure any High School Musical fan will love this film purely because Ashley Tisdale (aka Sharpay) is in it and her character doesn't differ much in this with the same girly mannerisms, over-exaggerated actions and fiery temper.
Robert Hoffman, who played Bethany's boyfriend, was also brilliant. He looked and acted the part of a slick and sly boyfriend which instantly made me dislike him so I could only find it funny when the kids ended up making a mockery of him. Doris Roberts was also a pleasant addition to the film due to me having seen her play the part of Marie in Everybody Loves Raymond.
Yes, admittedly, the film is a silly one with little alien creatures running around trying to take over the world, but it's done in an excellent way which doesn't make it seem silly or childish at all. The graphics used to create the aliens makes them look as if they are actually fighting the humans and nothing looks fake or superimposed - it looks like they are actually there. The ways that both the humans and aliens try to overpower and destroy each other are brilliant and the special effects created by these were so much fun to watch including a device to turn off the gravity, a giant potato spud gun and mind controlling devices which ended up creating an amusing Matrix-style fight scene between Ricky and Nana. But whilst trying to save the planet, the Pearson children still have some fun with a mind control device that has taken over Ricky making him look like a complete idiot in the process.
This was a way better film than I thought it was going to be. It made me laugh so many times throughout from both the unknowledgeable human-like ways of the aliens and the dry and sarcastic humour coming from the kids. Children will love this with the action-packed battles and funny little alien creatures, and so will adults with lots of comedy and brilliant acting. I can't find fault with this film at all, it really was a thoroughly enjoyable movie - great story, great acting, full of action and comedy. A wonderfully fun and light-hearted movie which I loved.
