This is more of a popcorn movie, it certianly makes use of the special effects advancements to tell it's story. The dvd itself is a huge disappointment. A lot of effort went into the first two film's in terms of extras. The third was very poor but then again some production troubles meant that director David Fincher probably wanted t leave the film well alone. For the fourth film though there must be a decent amount of extras material.
The film is in 2.35:1 widescreen. It's anamorphically enhanced for widescreen tv's. The picture quality isn't as good as it should be. It's a bit soft and dull considering it's a only a few years old. You'd expect pin sharp quailty but you don't get it. Still I've seen a lot worse.
The sound is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. Now this is a very good mix full of rear effects as you'd expect. The bass kicks in when you'd expect. It doesn't disappoint but then again it shouldn't.
Now for the extras. Well all you get is a trailer and featurette. The trailer lasts for a minute and is really more of a teaser. I'm sure there was more than one trailer for this film so where are the rest ?
The featurette lasts all of four minutes and really just tells you to see the film with some interviews saying "yeah it's great". What a complete waste of time. What's more insulting is the fact that when this film was on VHS rental there was a 'making of' video that came with it. This ran for 25 minutes and was quite decent. it actually showed quite a bit of the underwater alien attack scene that is the film's highlight. Why wasn't this included instead ?
I can't help but feel this was a wasted opportunity by Fox. Maybe the opinion was that many people didn't like the film and it wasn't a huge hit by the alien films standard. Still that's no excuse not to include material that we know exists.

Now, two centuries later, military scientists working out of a remote space station have successfully cloned her at the eighth attempt. This is, of course, all part of their plot to research the alien species, as the cloned Ripley's DNA has become spliced with that of the alien inside her at her death. The nasty old scientists have also been using a motley group of space ... ...cryo-tubes to play host to alien embryos. Also amongst the pirate crew is Call (Ryder), who may have a hidden agenda regarding Ripley. Shortly after the latest shipment of human vessels arrives, a group of aliens bred by the science crew escapes, and soon start to kill everyone on board the station. The new colder, couldn't-give-a-damn Ripley teams up with the pirates as they try to escape from the alien threat.

Advantages: good effects Disadvantages: poor ending
After the disappointment that was Alien 3, I was highly excited after seeing the trailers for this fourth installation of the Alien Trilogy (????). So much so, that I dragged a friend along to a preview at the Odeon in the West End.
The promise of an action film like Aliens, combines with the suspense of the original movie, built some pretty high expectations around the movie.
The storyline was innovative and promising. A space salvage team stumble ... ...appears to have gained some Alien DNA in the cloning process. Therefore, our original heroin is no super strong and has acid for blood.
Before long the creatures are on the loose and the team are fighting to stay alive on the ship. There are some pretty good scenes, including the underwater escape where we get to see the aliens in water.
However, something went completely wrong halfway through the movie. The whole film dissolves into a shambles. ...

Advantages: More action than alien 3. Disadvantages: Definitely the last one!
Many fans of the Alien series (including myself) thought that this film would and could never happen. How wrong we all were. Ellen Ripley (played by Sigourney Weaver) returns in this film, the fourth instalment from the Alien series. On a research laboratory deep in space, medical records have been worked on to produce a Ripley clone – but not designed to bring her back to life – merely to grow the alien that was in her. The alien is removed from ... ...After the failure of Alien 3 (which I actually think is pretty good) this film goes more toward the success of Aliens by injecting weapons and multiple alien creatures to spice things up a little. There are some incredible scenes with stunning effects, plenty of action and some serious twists that will have the fans drooling. Aliens was critically acclaimed as the best film from the series and for me this comes a very close second place. ...

Well the sequels keep onm coming and the aliens triloby becomes 4
In truth there is an old saying (Barry norman said it)
1st film great 1st sequel average
2nd sequel crap
Well I think it must now say 3rd sequel
predictable
The first film is a classic of the genre but the second is unremarkable.
Strangly enough No 3 was good but 4 just goes over the same old ground and even though it has good acting inplaces and the idea is not to bad it fails ...

Advantages: The under water scene Disadvantages: Awful, annoying characters; Ultimately grotesque; This isn't the "real" Ripley; Bad jokes
...to see any good in Alien Resurrection. So immensely grotesque (even for my liking); a cold, heartless Ripley that is a disappointing far cry from the female action hero we used to love; and a group of wannabe badass marines that neither come close to the crew from Aliens they aspire to be, or strike any emotional chords with the audience- this is one ugly, ugly film.
Two hundred years later, some arsehole scientists have decided to mess with Ripley's ... ...alien inside her. Unluckily for avid Alien fans, Ripley #8 is nothing like the original Ripley as her DNA has become entwined with that of the alien, making her a sarcastic, egotistical monster, littered with bad humour. What's worse is Winona Ryder is even along for the ride, and is so utterly unconvincing and tentative in her attempt at creating a lesbian bond with Weaver in space that you wish the aliens would rip a hole in her chest just to justify ...

Advantages: Stylish, intriging end to the franchise Disadvantages: Ending feels rushed
Many expected this final installment to be a repeat of Aliens. It was'nt. That alone seems to be the reason why many reviewers have savaged a film that while not perfect was a great deal better than its direct predecessor.
Speaking of which, resurrection manages to take the unintentionally amusing and laughably patchy Alien3 and come up with a plausible way to bring back Ripley from the dead.
Now all those expecting Ripley to bond with a cutesy little girl who says "A-firmative", strap together two guns with duct tape or get down with her bad self inside a power suit will no doubt feel let down by the new "alienated" Ripley that manages to be far more menacing and infinitely more interesting than the old one.
Those expecting the Marines to kick Alien butt will also be disappointed - in this film they actually manage to do ...
Advantages: A Brilliant way to finish the Alien Quadrilogy Disadvantages: Last of a Brilliant Legacy
Its 200 years after the climax of Alien 3, Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) has been resurrected on the USM Auriga. Now the Alien Queen has been taken out of her, however there is some Alien DNA still inside enabling her to do some Alien characteristics. The scientists on the ship are keeping the Aliens breeding them and recording any progress they make.
Suddenly, the Aliens escape and begin their murdering rampage on a ship heading for Earth. The Queen then gives birth to a new species of Alien which could result in the end of the human race, Ripley and the ships crew are out to stop them.
The last one in the Alien series was produced 18 years after the first Alien movie and you can tell the difference. The special effects are alot more realistic and improved. Also, the story is as good as all the others as well as the characters ...
Advantages: Brilliant, a classic sci-fi movie Disadvantages: A little predictable.
DVD has a few extra bits in, the best being the automatic sentry guns. It's like shooting fish in a barrel.
I'm not going to spoil the movie for those few that have never seen it, but if you are into science fiction or horror films then buy this DVD. It is incredible. Special features of the disk include the restored footage and some behind-the-scenes stuf.

In ALIEN 4: RESURRECTION, the fourth installment of the wildly popular series of science fiction movies that began with ALIEN, a drop of Ellen Ripley's (Sigourney Weaver) blood spawns a part human, part alien Ripley clone. Now that Ripley is dead, the clone has fallen into the hands of government scientists who want to harness the Ripley clone's breeding powers. When the new and improved Ripley lands on a ship of androids, her mere appearance sets the action rolling. Stepping in to help put a stop to the madness is tiny android named Call (Winona Ryder), as well as the ship's fellow crew members (including Dominique Pinon, Ron Perlman, and Michael Wincott). For the first time in his feature film career, French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (DELICATESSEN, THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN) takes sole directorial credit, leaving his partner Marc Caro to concentrate on artistic direction. ALIEN RESURRECTION has far more in common with ALIEN 3 than the series' first two parts, most notably due to its overtly humorous tone. Jeunet also applies his traditional Gothic visual style to the slimy, effects-heavy riot, resulting in a work that is as reliant upon style as it is substance. Scripted by Joss Whedon, creator of the Warner Brothers television show, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, the film marks an energetic and flashy transition to Hollywood film making for Jeunet.
