Sorry folks not as good the HG Wells classic. There were a large group of us seeing this and we left the cinema with the same mixed emotions. The DVD is not much better but Spielberg does deliver some memorable moments.

DVD Description
Boxset of all 4 features in the ALIEN quadrilogy. The ultimate sci-fi/horror series, ALIEN: Director Ridley Scott's breakthrough film, an immensely successful blend of horror and science fiction. Starring Sigourney Weaver as warrant officer Ellen Ripley, the crew of the space cargo ship Nostromo land on a moribund planet in response to a faint SOS. Inside a crashed ship, the crew members come upon strange pods...ALIENS: Ripley, the sole survivor from the first film, is awakened after 57 years of drifting through space, her stories disbelieved by Company executives who tell her that the alien's planet is now inhabited and colonized. ALIEN 3: David Fincher's debut as a director, ALIEN 3, picks up almost directly after the events in ALIENS, finding Ripley frozen in suspended animation as her ship crashes on Fiorina 161, a prison planet. Trapped on a barren planet with convicts and no weapons of any kind, Ripley soon realizes that an alien was also on the ship and has survived. ALIEN RESURRECTION: The fourth installment of the wildly popular series, a drop of Ellen Ripley's blood spawns a part human, part alien Ripley clone. Now that Ripley is dead, the clone has fallen into the hands of government scientists who want to harness the Ripley clone's breeding powers.
Advantages: Brilliant, a classic sci-fi movie Disadvantages: A little predictable.
...a few extra bits in, the best being the automatic sentry guns. It's like shooting fish in a barrel.
I'm not going to spoil the movie for those few that have never seen it, but if you are into science fiction or horror films then buy this DVD. It is incredible. Special features of the disk include the restored footage and some behind-the-scenes stuf.
** IMPORTANT NOTE **
At the time of writing, Woolworths have a special offer on DVD's. Buy 2 get 1 free. I managed to get all Alien, Aliens, Alien3, Alien Resurrection, The Fifth Element and Never Been Kissed (4 the missus) for just under £68. The Alienboxset costs £69.99 so in effect you get 2 free DVD's!!!!!!...

Advantages: origional Disadvantages: not too atmospheric
...The first of the alien quartet, quintet? The first of the alien series! That’s better, if anyone knows, tell me, I know a set of three is a trilogy! Anyway as I was saying, the first of the set. Probably not the best, id say aliens was the best, or resurrection. This is more of a scene setter for the rest of the films, with the aliens being not too convincing or scary. The atmosphere isn’t really here either although Mrs Weaver is great in the role of ripley, she doesn’t really come into the role as strongly till the next film. Basic aliens attack, its up to ripley to get rid of them which she does, but alas all is not safe, and the aliens find a way to come back, bugger! Cue next opinion....

Advantages: its an Alien Movie Disadvantages: Poor story, and all characters look the same
...Probably the worst film in the franchise. This film is set directly after the Aliens Movie. Hicks and Newt are killed when the escape pod they are in crash on a prison planet. This in itself was bad for the fans of the franchise (as Hicks and Newt were voted two of the best characters).
The film itself is very disappointing. It is very hard to tell who is who, as they are all male and all have shaven heads. It got to the point where you were asking yourself if a certain character had been killed by the Alien before!
The film then degenerates into a running movie with prisoners herding the Alien into the smelting room.
The last sequence was the worst, with Ripley throwing herself of a platform into the liquid metal, killing herself and her newborn Alien.
If you like Alien and Aliens, then you will really need to watch this movie...
