How great it is to have three of Disneys most original classics in a presentable box set. These are three of Disneys older and more original classics where the animations are nowhere near as advanced as the likes of Pixar or other computer generated images. No, these are the original pen, ink and true serious magic that only Disney can capture in children and adults alike.
The boxset is available in all good film retailers such as Silverscreen. At the moment the prices in supermarkets (Tesco) range from £24.99 to £26.99 but that is still a lot cheaper than the main film retailers. (Most recently they have been withdrawn from ASDA because it is part of Disney tradition to release a set for limited time only - The box is still available on Ebay or the Disney website)
(My friend kindly lent me her box set for me to see the differences between the films i already had on video. There was slightly a better picture quality from each of the films in the box set)
#Dumbo
First we start with Dumbo, the oldest out of the box set was released in 1941. Approximate running time: 64mins.
Dumbo the loveable baby elephant was born with enormous ears and rejected by the circus in which he travels. Laughed at and humiliated, he
leaves the circus after a frightening uproar and panic following his mothers natural protection for the baby. Along his travels some animated singing pals and, in particular a Timothy Q Mouse, find use for his massive ears and plan to make him a star. Songs such as "when i see an elephant fly" are fun and catchy and a heartfelt moment during "Baby Mine" between mother and baby.
Winner of Best Music Score at the Oscars and Best animation Design at an early Cannes festival, its easy to see why this film is always on at christmas and makes perfect viewing for youngsters. There are a few weepy scenes but overall, the film has a loving and caring theme with some really uplifting moments.
My opinions? I thought this film was lovely and heartwarming and i cried a few times! Having seen this film when i was little (about 5 i think) i enjoyed the singing and the action, but i watched it when i was a little older and saw the plot rather than the colours, was moved.
#Alice in Wonderland
Next we look at Alice in Wonderland. Based on lewis carrols legendary story tale, it is the oldest idea but later release date. The film was released in 1951 and runs an approximatley 75 minutes.
In this colourful, unusual picture we see Alice, a curious little girl who wants to explore the world deep in the rabitt hole. On her journey she learns many morals from each different character's tales, while she forgets about what the rabitt was doing and tries to reach home. Panicked and upset she lands herself in a spot of bother with the queen. Will she wake from her vivid dream in time?
This film is very pshycadelic and each scene is just as bizarre as the next. The picture contains very colourful animation and the songs are extremely catchy and comical. You will find yourselves singing "painting the roses red" and "im late" in work and with characters such as the Mad Hatter and the twins Dweedle Dee and Dweedle Dum children will be enlightened and entertained. It was nominated for Best animated music score in 1955
My opinion? Again, first saw when i was younger (5) and found it very colourful and sometimes confusing. As it used to be on every Easter, the more i watched it growing up, the more i understood each part of the film. My grandad used to read fables to me and teach me morals in the story, and i made that connection with this film. Each seperate journey Alice takes through the rabitt hole she discovers a different world and there is always a moral to learn. Somewhat educating as well as plain weird, if you look into the way each tale is portrayed this film is really clever.
#Aristocats
Finally, Aristocats. Disney's 20th full length animated feature was released in 1970 and took almost five years to make. It was unfortunately, the last Film Walt Disney approved before he passed away1966 and was almost released under Buena Vista productions. Aproximate running time: 79 minutes.
This is so different to any other disney animation. We follow a family of four well looked after, well spoken cats who reside at a large mansion in france. The plot thickens when the trusted household butler tries to rid the cats so he will be inline to inherite his elderly mistress's fortune. Escaped from the evil butler Edgars grasp, the cats Duchess and her kittens must travel across france to reach home. Stopping in paris for a bit of sing song with Thomas o Malley and the alley cats, a romance blossoms between the elder cats. This film is so fun, and comical it definetely appeals to adults as well as kids. The songs are snazzy and catchy. George Bruns was responsible for the many jazz bands that contributed but unfortunately, was not nominated for any award despite its extremely upbeat theme. My opinion? I loved this film. i think i was 8 years when i first borrowed the video from my local corner shop. I loved the colours, the singing and the cats. Im a cat person so i found this film fun and comical, and it managed to capture the different spats a cat has!! For non cat people it is still fun and catchy, and the story is enough to keep you on your toes. Having seen it so many times it never gets dull and i know a lot of male uni students that love this one and openly admit it!!
