Ali G; Britain's stupidest character created by one of Britain smartest comedians.
Ali G is one of the many characters played by Sasha Baron Cohen. This particular incarnation is my personal favourite. Ali G is, basically, an idiot. He comes out with a of stupid comments and numerous comments that are sexist and homophobic.
Ali G's rise to fame came on the 11 o'clock show many years ago. All he did there was to give interviews in the way that only he does and cause a bit of mayhem by saying a few comments that weren't considered politically correct. He then got his own show where this trend continued but on a grander scale. He often went to different countries and took his stupid comments with him.
After all this came Ali G; Indahouse. This was a film where Ali becomes a politician and tries to change things for the better.
The film starts in a comical fashion. Two women are being harassed by some men and he comes to their rescue. These few men suddenly turn into loads of men and start shooting at him. Obviously he dodges all the bullets in his own stupid way and even manages to save a child in the process. This one scene basically warms you what to expect for the rest of the film. A simple yet brilliant no brainer that, in my case at least, will have you in stitches.
The main reason that Ali becomes a politician is to save his precious "John Nike Leisure Centre" where he teaches his "Keep it Real" class. The leisure centre is being demolished as it is a drain on public funding. The only way to do this is for him to become a politician and try and change things from the inside. He then embarks on his journey to save the centre. Along the way he forgets about his girlfriend and friends and looses sight of this along with his turf in Stains - the Westside, just past the Boris the Spider climbing frame.
This film is full of stupid scenes that Cohen has cleverly created including a brilliant one where the two gangs are racing in the street. You are given the impression they are going fast but when the camera zooms in on the speedometer, they are going at the speed limit and even get overtaken by and old woman on one of those mobility chairs.
I wont give away any more of the plot but suffice to say it doesn't get very complicated and gives you plenty of laughs. There are a few well known people in this film such as Rhona Mitra, Charles Dance, Michael Gambon and a brief cameo appearance from Naomi Campbell.
Many people don't find the film funny and find it offensive and while I can understand that view point, I do feel it is necessary to point out that the film is in fact a joke and the comments that Cohen comes out with are simply his view on society and, to be honest, I know a lot of people that act like him. Of course it wont be to the same extent as he exaggerates it but I see many things in him that I often see in the pub.
I love this film. I think it is hilarious and worth a watch as long as you don't take it too seriously and simply take it for what it is.
