THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE DVD EDTION OF ALI G IN DA HOUSE..THERE IS NO LISTING FOR IT?
The most controversial and hilarious number one act...ali g, see the original superstar from staines as you've never seen him before.
assisted by his loyal crew, the west staines massive and long suffering girlfriend 'me julie', he emerges as the unlikeliest of heroes - he's invincible, insatiable and of course irresistable to bitches!
certificate: 15 - suitable for persons of 15 years and over..there is a lot of swearing in this film
extras: audio commentary by ali g and ricky c. 'scenes not in it, innit' - deleted scenes and outtakes (22 mins). 'me video diary' - video clips showing the making of the movie which itself is very funny(12 mins). 'talkin' da talk' - a guide to ali's slang (2 mins). ali's gallery - stills gallery (1 min). theatrical trailer. 2 teaser trailers.
starring: sacha baron cohen, michael gambon, kellie bright, charles dance, martin freeman, rhona mitra.
director(s): mark mylod
it was only a matter of time before tv funnyman sacha baron cohen took his ali g character to the big screen - the usual tv interview format was not, of course, a viable option for the film. instead, we are introduced to the everyday life of the man from staines and get to see some of his previously mentioned acquantainces including his mate ricky c, me julie, the staines playground and the john nike leisure centre just to name a few.
the most important question to ask i suppose is whether this is as good as his tv material. an immediate answer would be no - this is not as clever and definitely holds less replay value. the jokes are a lot more puerile and the plot is not quite believable - that said, the film is not too bad and will put a smile on your face from time to time. In fact, a handful of the lines hand me pissing in my pants so to speak!
His supporting cast in the film are more than adequate and there are a few recognisable names among the bunch - Sacha Baron Cohen, Michael Gambon, Kellie Bright, Charles Dance, Martin Freeman, Rhona Mitra and cameo from Naomi Campbell and so many more....
Sacha Baron Cohen is still very good as Ali G - it's just a shame that his script wasn't on par. He has ironically suffered from his own fame - the explosion in his character's popularity and recognition has left very few people in the UK that he can prey upon with false interviews. He has addressed this issue by filming a series in the US, for example, but it might be time to hang up his designer clothes and concentrate on other things, such as his equally funny Borat character.
Overall, this is a sensibily short big-screen transition for Ali G - fans of his TV work might find some of this funny like me i did think this was a funny film, although people who hated his previous work or are from outside the UK will either hate it or not understand it.
