A foreword;

I've just had this op on Ciao's homepage for the last hour, and still no reads. Eyes are welling up once again, tears drying off my cheeks, waiting for a secondary wetting session, and my heart is totally and utterly broken. Shame on you lot for making me a nervous, unloved wreck. Go away, go, don't talk to me anymore, I'm too upset now.

Nah, only kidding. Where would I be without Ciao? The Carribean would be nice!
----------------------------------------------------------------

I must admit to a few things before starting to write another line of this op. When Ali G first appeared on our screens as a bit-part on the Eleven O’clock News Show on Channel 4, a couple of years back, I used to grapple with the TV remote control, hurrying my fingers to switch the channel over. The guy used to annoy so much so, that I stopped watching the show altogether after a few episodes. It was actually amazing I watched for that long as, to be fair, the show on the whole was c**p.

Nevertheless, Ali G got his own show a little while later, and by that time I seemed to have mellowed down in my taste and tolerance level of absurdity and nonsense (old age tends to work either positively or negatively on ones character, but I’m not sure how to interpret it in my case – reading this, you’d think I was 78, not 28). Little by little, watching snippet after snippet, I warmed to dear old Ali, later becoming a fairly dedicated fan in terms of viewing his show, and the clincher was that comic relief interview with Becks & Posh.

The film advertising did nothing for me, the single with Shaggy was certainly a total turn off, and I vowed not to waste my time going to watch a useless piece of movie-making. I just couldn’t grasp how they can transfer the show’s formula into a film, and that was that. I only lasted a couple of days from when the movie came out, talk about will power! At least I can blame my friend who went to see it the weekend before and loved it. I thought I’d give her the benefit of the doubt (like I really needed that as an excuse). Off I went to the local Odeon (do I get any commission for mentioning that bleedin’ name so much? Like heck, hmpph), expecting an hour and a half of inane, pointless comedy. How pleasantly surprised I was.

The film revolves, in loose terms, around Ali G, by freak accident, becoming an Member of Parliament for the Staines ‘massive’, in order to fight the closure of the local leisure activity centre. Let’s face it, he’ll do a damn better job than the lot presently residing at Westminster. He becomes embroiled in all sorts of mishaps, ridiculously unrealistic situations, and elevation into political positions that even the most insane amongst us (myself being first in the cue) cannot envisage, but still manages to carry the film through out all these foibles with a sense of engagement on the viewer’s part, with the viewer thinking ‘Get out of here, this ain’t never happening in real life, but you’ve convinced me to loosely believe in it for the duration of the film, because it’s so damn funny’.

The film, as you’d expect from Ali G, is full of sexually rude jibes, mild homophobic jokes, drug taking, various innuendos, and some racism (‘cause I is black). Somehow, the film is annoyingly funny, and despite many jokes being tried countless times, both in films and real life, they still come across as funny and tickly, if somewhat unoriginal. Some moments had the whole theatre in stitches, and there was this guy a couple of rows behind, who couldn’t contain himself the whole duration of the show, I was surprised he didn’t need the loo brigade to take him out every now and then to relieve some of all that comical tension he was letting out – it all added to the atmosphere, in a favourable sense.

FINAL VERDICT

I really enjoyed Ali G In Da House way beyond what I prepared myself for as a ground base attempt at cashing in on a successful TV show, and coupling some merchandise along the way – NO! Somehow, me not think me will buy any of the Ali Gear, to only end up looking like a batty boy. I have no hesitation in recommending the film if you’re after a few laughs, and are not easily offended. If we can’t take a joke on our nowadays highly mixed, culturally variant society, we might as well live on another planet.

PS Watch out for the bit where Ali G is tied to the railings, in protest, not forgetting to keep an eye on the blind man and his dedicated polishing techniques – classic.

Take care, fellow Ciaoers.

R :)

Saw him on Parkinson the other day and I thought Michael Ball was funnier. Probably will watch it though when it comes on Sky.
