Ali G is the brainchild of comedian Sacha Baron Cohen and this is the third main video he has released. This video includes a large section featuring his newest character Borat, the Kazhakstan TV reporter.
The Ali G character is based on a white youth from Staines who believes that he is a black gangster. When the character wasn't so weel known, he was able to get interviews with very famous people. The problem that his interviewees faced was that however absurd the questionning, there was the possibility that Ali G was from a highly rated "yoof" tv show and so to dismiss his crazy questions could have alienated them from a large section of the population. An example of this was when he interviewed Sir Rhodes Boyson about schools. He asked whether kids should be caned in school, followed by a very obvious gesture that he was referring to cocaine usage. Boyson was oblivious to this comment and carried on, eventually admitting that he was often caned in school!! Another example was when he interviewed Tony Benn and asked if the welfare state was so-called because it's "well fair". He proceeded to infuriate Benn by suggesting that it was far better to live on benefits than working for a living. Benn went ballistic which made the whole thing so much funnier.
Anyway, back to this video. Ali G can no longer do stitch ups on these shores. He has had his own TV show, movie and is an A list celeb. Therefore on this DVD he is talking to americans or the type of brits who don't know the
price of milk or who David Beckham is! His Borat character is superb. A lanky Kazhakstan tv reporter with a very poor command of English, he relys on peoples good nature to demonstrate things to him before making them look ridiculous with a very quick comment.
Introduction ------------
After inserting this disc, you are presented with an image of Ali sitting between two scantily clad women, garage music plays in the background. From here you can choose to Play, select chapter or go to the extras.
Chapters --------
Posh and Becks - The dvd starts with a showing of the Comic relief interview between Ali and the celeb couple. It is very funny and shows what good sports Posh and Becks really are. There are numerous references to Beckhams voice, dress sense and intellect but he takes it very well. This section is the first part, the second is at the end of the disc.
Economics - An interview with an American professor of economics. Aged about 70, he looks at Ali with complete bewilderment for the whole time. Ali tries to compare "supply and demand" with how popular various girls were in his playground and his relationship with his dear Julie. He then asks the Professors opinion on his idea to make millions by selling slippers on the internet.
Evolution - Another bewildered American professor is asked such stupid questions as "Do you shave monkeys to see if they are really humans?" "No!" "Do you wax them then?" Just several minutes of the most bizarre questions imaginable. You can see the Professor wondering if this is his reward for getting a Phd, or its american equivalent.
LA Gangs - Ali jets off to the mean streets of LA where he interviews a retired gang member. Despite the fact that you really wouldn't want to upset these people, Ali asks more ridiculous questions and at one stage asks if the bloods or the crips(LA gangs - very violent) would like to twin with the West Staines Massive, Ali's gang. He also asks if the initiation to get into the gang is more or less severe than his own initation of stealing a mars bar from a Staines Newsagent.
CIA - God knows how but Ali is granted audience with the head of the CIA. He spends several minutes explaining that he thinks it is "racialist" that they don't let in "thick people". Similar questionning to the above chapters really. Some are toe curlingly embarrassing.
Crime - The former Chief Constable of Essex is next. He is asked if when someone is arrested, an exchange takes place between the criminal and the policeman containing the words to Shaggys' "It wasn't me!" He also argues the benefits of being a gangster as they get more (**censored**) than everyone else.
Animals - By now I was starting to get a bit bored of the character and format. This time he is talking to an expert on animals and asks him such things as if it's true that some real life frogs collaborated with Sir Paul McCartney and helped to make the Budweiser ad. He asks the expert to say "WHASSSSSSUP!" when it's obvious that he really doesn't want to.
Ghosts - Ali is talking to a ghost expert and asks him to explain why his lights and tele went off, along with evryone elses on his estate, for nearly half an hour. He can't believe that it may just have been a power cut.
Borat Jagshemash - This is the highlight of the video. You just have to look at Borat and you will laugh. Don't ask me why. You just will. In this section we meet his family in Kazhakstan, join him at the Edinburgh Festival, go to the Labour party conference, meet a member of the institute of directors and finally the chairman of British Airways. In the funniest part of the disc, he then goes to a bowls club and proceeds to cause mayhem. He tries his hand at bowling before having a heated debate about why you can't use the wash basins as urinals. Made even funnier by the fact that he is taken so seriously.
Posh and Becks part2 - The conclusion to the earlier section.
EXTRAS ------ He speaks to two American er doctors and asks them ridiculous questions about the things they have seen and do in their jobs. He then asks an Electronics expert if people live inside TV's and how to de-scramble the fantasy channel. Finally Borat learns to play cricket and is told in no uncertain times by the aging club member that he can't use the woods as a toilet.
I really can't do this DVD justice with words alone. It is the subtle things about this disc that make it so good.
I feel that the Ali G character has run its course now and hope that Baron-Cohen comes back with more Borat or another new character very soon.
For newcomers and hardened ALI G fans alike, I thoroughly recommend this DVD.
