WILL SMITH is an excellent actor. I can see why he was nominated for an academy award as a lead actor. I had a hard time thinking he was not ALI. He had the walk, the talk and the mannerisms
I remember very little about ALI except that he was a great boxer. All my memories of him are recent. When I think of ALI, I think of the man whose body is riddled with a crippling disease. A man who has trouble walking. Not the determined, arrogant, but seemingly gentle man portrayed in this movie. I vaguely remember him not going in to the Army, and thought him just another draft-dodger. I did not understand his disgust at killing when he seemed so violent in the ring.
The movie takes you through ALI’s early life. His first fight in the ring as Cassius Clay, his conversion to the Nation of Islam. His friendship with Malcolm X. His being stripped of the championship title, his fight to be allowed to box again and his comeback against George Foreman in a boxin promotion titled “RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE” Through it all, he is portrayed as a peaceful, soft spoken man, until he gets in to the boxing ring, and then he seems to go through a personality change. The fight scenes seemed especially brutal compared to what I have witnessed in boxing rings today.
I was also unaware of his several marriages. I think the movie did a good job in showing that he did not think of himself as a saint, either Muslim or otherwise. He was aware of his wandering eye and his lust for beautiful women. According to the movie, he had four wives.
I was also unaware of Ali’s close relationship with Howard Cossell, excellently portrayed by Jon Voight. His voice, his appearance, his posture, was first-rate Cossell, and until I read the credits, I did not know who the actor was.
MUHAMMED ALI/CASSIUS CLAY, Will Smith – covering about a 15 years span in Ali’s life.
HOWARD COSSELL, Jon Voight
JEFFREY WRIGHT, Howard Bingham
MALCOM X, Mario Van Peebles
DON KING, Myketti Williamson
ANGELO DUNDEE, Ron Silver
SONJA RUI – Ali’s first wife, Jada Pinkett Smith
BUNDINI BROWN – Ali’s second wife, Jamie Fox
VERONICA PORSCHE – Ali’s third wife – Michael Michelle
This was not a great movie in my opinion. It was somewhat entertaining and informative. It was over two hours long and rated R. If you like boxing movies, or if you are interested in Ali, it would be a good movie to go see.

(+) Because of the new series the box set isn't complete, which means it will be cheaper! (-) It isnt the complete box set so you'll have to buy the new dvds seperatly or wait for the new set!
Comedy - Original Language: English - Classification: 12 years and over - Starring: Tessa Peake-Jones, Buster Merryfield, David Jason, Nicholas Lyndhurst
Advantages: Good quality, enjoyable and interesting, good fights and good acting Disadvantages: Not a pure boxing film, or a pure life story. Too long and fails to last in the middle.
