In ALFIE, Michael Caine stars as the title character, a guiltless London lothario whose only pleasure in life seems to be a good time--he has a date with a different woman for each...
more...day of the week. After accidentally impregnating his live-in girlfriend, Gilda (Julia Foster), Alfie takes a vacation in the country to think about things--but he can't hide forever. Dodging his fatherly responsibilities, Alfie continues to engage in sexual affairs with a variety of women: millionairess Ruby (Shelley Winters), young runaway Siddie (Millicent Martin), and eventually his friend's wife, Lily (Vivien Merchant). The good times seem endless until misfortune strikes and Alfie is forced to face the product of his reckless debauchery.
Based on the novel of the same name by Bill Naughton, ALFIE touches on a number of controversial topics (polygamy and orphaning, for starters). Director Lewis Gilbert cleverly mixes comedy and tragedy; the end result: a crucial lesson about immorality and the rewards of peace of mind. The film features one of Caine's finest performances as well as an excellent supporting role by Merchant.

Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers were once married and produced films together such as 'Baby Boom' and 'The Parent Trap'. Now divorced they are going down seperate roads producing films.

Nancy has been succesful of the two making the hit film 'What women want' and Something's Gotta Give; Charles less succesful with 'The Affair of the Necklace' and now this remake of the 1966 Micheal Caine film. The both of them seem to be working through something as it appears both of their recent films seem to circle around the same thing - the comeuppance of what used to be called a cad.

This film may have had some credit for its directing, but really its uneven at the best of times.

The performaces however are all brilliant, each women creates a complex and full character. Namely Nia Long as the woman Alfie's best friend loves who puts in a sterling performance.

The films main and very significant asset is the title role by Jude Law. He makes us as charmed by alfie as the girls he runs after, even though he tells us what hes thinking. Not many actors are capable of making an unsympathetic character appealing whilst talking to the audience. Law is fascinating throughout this film and at times quite touching.

However the film as a whole is somewhat a letdwon and is pehaps as empty as Alfies broken heart.

Parents should know that this film contains scenes of a sexual nature and contains lots of drinking smoking and unprotected sex so pehaps not one for the children

All in all Alfie has its moments but lacks that special something, some great acting but does'nt really beat the original at all. But still a good effort and provides some entertainment in places
