One of my favourite personalities of all time is Alexander the Great, and so, I expect nothing but greatness from a movie that is supposed to tell his life story. I expect flawless casting, perfect acting, great props, great filming and camera shots, etc. However, if you watch the movie, you will realise that the movie Alexander was not perfect, and even if you have no clue who Alexander the Great was or know that he even existed, you'd know that it could have been better.
First of all theres the issue with the casting. Now, I'm no big film buff, neither am I a director, or one of those jobs that is big in the movie field, but even I was able to figure out that some roles just wouldn't fit some actors from he outset. For example, I love Colin Farrel and Jared Leto, but I certainly wouldn't have casted Colin Farrel as Alexander the Great or Jared Leto as Hephaestion. In fact, I heard a rumour once that Leonardo DiCaprio was supposed to be cast in the role as Alexander, which I think might have been better. I'm not saying that Colin Farrel and Jared Leto did an awful job with their roles. I'm only saying that they weren't impressive like I would have wanted those two characters to be.
The acting could have been better too. I thought some parts were very overacted and in others, I felt like the actors weren't even trying. For example, I expected a little more from Angelina Jolie who starred as Alexander's mother Olympias. I think that to some extent she managed to capture the essence of Olympias as being very intimidating, powerful and untouchable, however, she still didn't bring it out enough. Neither she nor Jared Leto's accent was good either,a and some lines said made me cringe.
Makeup and costuming was great though, and the battle scenes weren't bad either.
