Firstly, before I begin, may I point out - only one review of this DVD before this one, bizarre! Surely more people out there love Alan Partridge?!?
People thought it was all over for Alan since he shot dead a guest on 'Knowing Me, Knowing You', but no, he came 'bouncing back'. Despite living in the Linton travel tavern halfway between Norwich and London and hosting 'Up With The Partridge' on Radio Norwich (the 4am - 7am shift), he does his best to get his face back on TV, no matter what...
Episode 1: A Room With Alan
Alan's meal at the BBC with Tony Hayers trying to get a second series goes from bad to worse - from suggesting 'monkey tennis' and 'arm wrestling with Chaz & Dave' to asking Hayers to; 'Smell my cheese you mother!', having just splashed out on a new £324,000 house, with 'enough room to swing a tiger, but you wouldn't to, considering it weighs the best part of a ton!'. Ultimately, this leaves Alan back at square one.
Episode 2: Alan Attraction
Alan has the dilemma of sacking all his staff at Peartree Productions, or having to drive a Mini Metro - 'They re-badged it you fool!'. As expected, he chooses the former option. But he opts not to immediately sack his secretary Jill, and instead takes her to 'a cracking owl sanctuary' and then partake in an all-you-can-eat buffet at the travel tavern, but when she opts to use her chocolate mousse for something more than just being eaten out of a bowl, Alan has the perfect excuse to sack her as well!
Episode 3: Watership Alan
Alan inadvertently insults a group of farmers on his radio show; 'for breakfast he must have had an infected spinal column in a bap', and ends up being attacked by local farmers during shooting the making of a promotional video for a boating company. Chris Morris and Simon Pegg guest star here, in my personal favourite episode.
Episode 4: Basic Alan
The Travel Tavern is being refurbished, so Alan decides to take a trip up the M11 for some windscreen washer fluid. When he returns he happens to find Lynn, his overworked P.A throughout the series, 'engaging in fun which excludes her employer'. Alan is not amused and goes out to cause chaos with Michael the hotel janitor.
Episode 5: To Kill A Mocking Alan
Alan hosts a function at the Travel Tavern. 'It's a television chat show that's not on TV but has tea, Wagon Wheels and Sue Cook.' But disaster strikes as Sue Cook pulls out and then, his plan to appear ever popular in front of Irish TV representatives backfires and Alan finds himself trapped in his only fan's house, who also happens to be an obsessed lunatic with Alan and David Copperfield. Thankfully he escapes, down a dead end - 'No way you big spastic, you're a mentalist!'
Episode 6: Towering Alan
Alan receives some 'bad' news...Tony Hayers has died by falling of his roof, trying to take down a TV aerial. The new head of programming and friend of Alan's, Chris Feather offers Alan the break he wanted - a five year contract for a million pounds. However, Chris dies during the interview, and Alan has to forge the signature to ensure everything is in order. To celebrate he hosts a party in his room at the travel tavern, which as expected, is a disaster....
This is a fabulous piece of satircal comedy. Steve Coogan along with Armando Iannucci and Peter Baynham have produced genius comedy - and hundreds of great lines, as my review shows!!
DVD extras include:
Commentary By Alan Partridge And His PA Lynn Benfield Commentary By Steve Coogan Armando Iannucci And Peter Baynham Deleted Scenes And Outtakes An Improvised Deleted Scene Cast And Crew Biographies Photo Gallery Scene Selection
You could probably pick it up at around about £11.99 in some places, particularly on the net, expect a little bit extra in retail stores though.
Series 2 & Knowing Me, Knowing You are great as well and should be added to your collections, but this is certainly the DVD for you if you want to get into Alan Partridge - AH HA!!
