lost his beloved chat showKnowing Me, Knowing You, and now reduced to the pre-Breakfast slot playing old T'Pau and Soft Cell singles to an audience of farmers and all-night bakery workers. He's also lodged at the Linton Travel tavern, whose permanently smiling manageress, bland decor and themed buffets are redolent of what vast tracts of England have become. He's very much at home there. While there's much media satire in Partridge's pitiful pitches of programme ideas to the BBC ("Inner city sumo? Monkey tennis?"),I'm Alan Partridgeis more a bleakly hilarious take on Modern Middle English Man, irascible and profoundly bored. Between innumerable moments of high, wild comedy, such as a disastrous video Partridge does for a boating agency and an encounter with his one (insane) fan, the most telling moments of the series come with his efforts to fill his dismally empty days, taking a trouser press to pieces, staring at the astro turf at an owl sanctuary or walking to a service station to buy windscreen cleaning fluid just for something to do. All this proved a little too darkly uncomfortable for mainstream audiences--yet Alan Partridge was probably the finest British comic creation of the 1990s. --David Stubbs

independence that flared over Easter 1916 and eventually wrought the fateful partition of Ireland in 1921. The series generated controversy before it was transmitted. But then dramas about Irish history are always subjected to this kind of interrogation: Neil Jordan'sMichael Collinsrevisited the same period, and caught similar flak.Rebel Heartcharts the coming of age of young Ernie Coyne (James D'Arcy), who defies his prosperous family to fight for Irish freedom at Dublin's GPO on April 24, 1916. The Rising founders as many Dubliners disdain the depleted rebels, whose socialist contingent is themselves scornful of their leader, priggish Padraic Pearse. Nevertheless Coyne learns to handle a pistol, acquits himself bravely, and emerges from prison to fall in with the emergent Sinn Fein and the plans of charismatic Michael Collins to "step up the war" against the British. Ernie's passion for dark-eyed Belfast republican Ita Feeney (Paloma Baeza) leads him to undertake missions in the "Black North", where he is terminally hardened by witnessing the police-sanctioned massacre of Ita's family. Eventually he must reckon with the prospect of partition, and the bitterness of a civil war that sets him at enmity with his old comrade Tom O'Toole (Vincent Regan). In his celebrated novels (The CatastrophistandOverthrown by Strangers),Rebel Heart's screenwriter Ronan Bennett has shed light on Ireland from the unlikely vantages of Africa and Central America. Here, he's on home turf. With its photogenic cast, period sheen, and soaring theme by The Corrs,Rebel Heartis well mounted and thoughtful; though its more generic love-and-war aspects sometimes obscure Bennett's sharper insights into the hopes and discontents of Irish republicanism. --Danny McGavin

Steve Coogan has produced some great comedy characters over the last few years. I am a huge fan of many of them (including the lovely Pualine Calf) but few of them have the popularity that Alan Partridge has, which continues to be a huge success with high ratings for re runs on digital channels.
The character of Alan Partridge is almost like an amalgamation of evrything bad about television and the status it provides, with a hint of desperation. Imagine a mad scientist in his (or her) lab creating a monster to dominate our tv screens with taudry television...poor dress sense, no real understanding of topics and current events beyond your own very limited understanding and a total disregard for your guests and their stories...and there you have it...Alan Partridge.
Alan starte doff on Radio for with the brilliantly hilarious 'Knowing me -Knowing you - he actually had plans to use the same title for a tv series about ill health 'knowing M E knowing you' in the future, just to illustrate how his mind works. The format for these shows was simple. Guests would come on stage to a well known Abba song and then he would interview them.....albeit badly. Usually he would start with a 'what do you do?' question and each show would end with 'and on that bombshell....'. The format for it was simple and transferred well to television. The first series focussed upon his chat show and quintessentially exposed the character as a bigot, racist and lacking any intelligence at all...hence why we all loved him!
There was ultimately a huge fall from grace when a guest died on the last show and the ratings...declined to an all time low.
So we then move into I am Alan Partridge which focussed upon Alan and his ailing career. For a man who has lost everything he appears not to be bitter...but secretly you can tell that he wants everyone else to share in his misery.
Alan is now living in a Travel Tavern. He has moved out of his house as his with has kicked him out an dmoved in his personal trainer. His children (Fernando and Denise) do not really want to have anything to do with him. The only person totally dedicated to Alan is his personal assistant Lin. Lin is long suffering, yet totally infactuated with him, I suppose you could say she is a 'bit' in love with him, but infactuation is a better way to describe it, throughout the series you see her go and do the most bizarre things to please him, yet she does it with a smile (she is a baptist so she may see it as performing her christian duty however).
Alan is now the late night host of slot on Radio Norwich, well when I say late night I actually mean the very early morning! He is frustrated that he has lost his television show, but is determined to get back up there, even though he admits he hates the general public and all they stand for.
The episodes have great story lines that you can watch independently or as a part of the series, so good is the writing and the comedy that they work either way.
Strong supporting characters enable this alongside Lin. i would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when casting this show, it must have been hilarious to see how they could get just the right people to work with Steeve Coogan to produce such comedy timing.
Michael who works at the hotel plays a key role and soon becomes Alan's friend (if you can call it that) which remains a central theme of series two. I really enjoyed seeing the realtionship between these two blossom and culminating in attempting to steal road traffic cones...only to be caught. Great stuff.
The Travel Tavern staff are also very well cast. Susan the boss of the desk is great, smiling through all of Alan's banality...until the last episode when something just had to give.
There are also performances throught the six episodes that stand out.
Dave Clifton - The DJ who does the breakfast show...and the relationship Alan has with him (beyond jealousy!)
Jill - The secretary from Peartree Productions (that goes bust after he does not get a second series) who is a fifty year old divorcee. Without giving too much away the Valentine dinner and ensuing madness is a highlight for me.
And finally Tony Hayres - Comptroller of BBC television programming...who is the architect of Alan's demise, a great character who surprisingly cannot be swayed by Alan's new ides for television programmes which include inner city sumo - fat people from estates wrestling or even beter...monkey tennis.
In only six episodes of the first series we are treated to hilarity, tinged with sadness and most brilliantly comedy that makes you cringe. There are far too many best bits to mention but if I had to choose one it would be Alan realising who is stalker is...and his reaction to the confronting the stalker with guests from Irish TV, I think it is probably one of the funniest things I have ever seen.
Alan Partridge is Steve Coogan at his very best. It is hard sometimes not to consider him a real person as there are traitis of Alan in all of us.

Advantages: Very very funny. Can be watched over and over again. Disadvantages: Don't think there are any.
Since shooting a guest on his “Knowing me, knowing you” chat show, Alan Partridge’s career went into freefall. He was not granted a second series and was in fact sacked from the BBC. To make matters worse his wife left him for a fitness instructor and he’s homeless, having to live in a travel tavern in Linton (which is equidistance between London and Norwich). Oh my god do i love Mr Alan Partridge!! This is laugh till you pee comedy brought to life by the very talanted Steve Coogan. Okay so it might not appeal to everyone, but what does....Even if your not into this kind of comedy, i guarantee that you will at least smirk once during an episode. Advantages: Endless hours of humour! Disadvantages: None what so ever!
Firstly, before I begin, may I point out - only one review of this DVD before this one, bizarre! Surely more people out there love Alan Partridge?!?
People thought it was all over for Alan since he shot dead a guest on 'Knowing Me, Knowing You', but no, he came 'bouncing back'. Despite living in the Linton travel tavern halfway between Norwich and London and hosting 'Up With The Partridge' on Radio Norwich (the 4am - 7am shift), he does his best ... ...Episode 1: A Room With Alan
Alan's meal at the BBC with Tony Hayers trying to get a second series goes from bad to worse - from suggesting 'monkey tennis' and 'arm wrestling with Chaz & Dave' to asking Hayers to; 'Smell my cheese you mother!', having just splashed out on a new £324,000 house, with 'enough room to swing a tiger, but you wouldn't to, considering it weighs the best part of a ton!'. Ultimately, this leaves Alan back at square one.

Advantages: Stays funny after several views. Good value for money. Disadvantages: Too few episodes.
Alan Partridge is perhaps one of the most recognisable British comedy characters to have ever graced our TV screens. In this series, Partridge (played by the comedian and impressionist Steve Coogan) is found taking up residence in the Lynton Travel Tavern (convenient as it is 'equidistant between London and Norwich' in the words of Mr Partridge himself). This is after his wife has kicked him out of his home shortly after having his chat show Knowing ... ...viewing figures. The 6 hilarious episodes follow the character's everyday goings on. He has also found himself a job at Radio Norwich presenting an early breakfast morning show. What makes this series so utterly funny is that no matter who he meets (whether it be his tiring PA Lynn, or even the bloke who works at the nearby BP garage), he somehow manages to alienate them in his own inimitable way. For anybody who has seen Partridge before, then this ...
