How does the genre of the film Aladdin help it appeal to a wide audiences and not just children.
Walt Disney, one of the best companies in family entertainment produced Aladdin. It has produced lots animated films , including Bambi (1942), The Jungle Book (1967), and The Lion King (1994). Also produced or co produced a lot of live-action films, ranging from Mary Poppins (1964) to Pulp Fiction (1994) which was made by Miramax (their subsidiary company). I think it is important that Disney produced this film as they mostly specialize in family films so one of their aims is to make those films appealing for everyone. But why does the narrative and genre do this in Aladdin? Aladdin is the archetypal battle between good and evil with a twist, the genie and this is one of the reasons I love Aladdin.
Aladdin meets the narrative theory of Propp, as it is a fairy tale, that there are 8 character roles and 31 functions
that move the story on. You can see some of this in the sequence I have chosen in my sequence there is the 'princess' (Jasmine) the 'hero' (Aladdin) and The 'helper' (Genie and the magic carpet). Also one of the 31 functions is displayed in my sequence the hero is prohibited from doing something; Aladdin is prohibited by, to marry the princess. I think because Aladdin meets this narrative theory it makes it more appealing for a wide audience as it is a simple narrative structure that makes the film predictable which makes it. However it shows a sense of security as most people know that it is a simple story, so it doesn't confuse the younger audience and make it enjoyable and easy to watch for older audiences this simple plot makes the film appealing to everyone.
Robin Williams is the voice behind the genie; this is quite typical, as the genie is the funniest character as Robin Williams puts his comedian skills into play. Like Williams's personality the genie is not confined by time space or physical laws and he uses his endless supernatural power not to fight evil like the typical Disney film but for comedy. Robin Williams being the voice of the genie makes him more appealing to a wide audience, as we laugh at the ridiculous way he puts things or at the actual jokes. For example in my sequence the genie says 'Enough about you Casanova talk about her' this is definitely more funny for an older audiences, as most younger children will not understand this use of intertextuality. But because the genie is still in the form of a bee some children will laugh, as it is unusual making it appealing to wider age range but this piece of comedy is definitely meant for teenagers and adults due to the phrase. then begins one of my favourite songs ever 'A Whole New World'
The songs in Aladdin give it a lovely twist of musical identity and I think the Songs make the film special from other film, it sort gives you a break from the narrative or uses the song to explain to carry on the story, this is the case with 'A whole new world' as it is the song where Aladdin and Jasmines love is finally shown to each other so it carries the story on. This song is very powerful and romantic it appeals to anyone who is in touch with their emotions no matter what age. This song is typical of a musical for obvious reason. Its also very typical of romances, as song are used in romances as they I think more powerful than words and songs have always have been away for people to express there feelings. This song is meant to make the audience feel the way Aladdin and Jasmine feel about eachother. it is not meant to make us laugh if anything is meant to make us cry but that depends on whose watching. The lyrics are simple but still effective which helps a younger audience to sing along. The animation during this song is very advanced for its time. The C.G.I used is very advanced and is one of the first successful film to use it this appealing to any type of audience at the time it was released as it is was new and diverse. This film is truly one of the greatest films ever made it has everything from comedy to magic carpets, even though this is my opinion and obviously other peoples will vary but you still have to respect this film for its Amazing use of song and C.G.I.
