A landmark film that introduced much of the Western world to modern anime, AKIRA is a marvel of modern animation. Based on Katsuhiro Otomo's 2,000 page manga, AKIRA begins on July...
more...16, 1988, when what was believed to be an atomic bomb was dropped on Tokyo, completely destroying the city and marking the beginning of WWIII. Thirty-one years later, Neo-Tokyo has sprung from the ruins of the old city and is experiencing a prolonged period of civil unrest caused by student uprisings, political instability, and, most destructively, biker gangs. One of the members of these biker gangs, Tetsuo, is detained by the military after a near accident with a strange young boy. After recognising innate psychic ability in him, the military begins using Tetsuo as a test subject to channel Akira, a source of unimaginable power and the cause of the explosion that destroyed the original Tokyo. However, the military's plan backfires, and instead of locating the source of Akira's power, Tetsuo becomes a medium for it. Endowed with incredible psychic powers that make every one of his destructive impulses a reality, Tetsuo begins to go on a rampage that threatens to completely annihilate Neo Tokyo. Combining a complex science-fiction universe with intricately detailed animation and phantasmagoric images, AKIRA is a stunning visual experience and a disturbing vision of the future.

This film is one of the most improtant animes ever. The film is sheer brilliance, even if you hate manga films, this will blow you away.
The year is 2019, neo tokyo. now usually I would want to explain a films plot, but in this case, I wont. I do not want to spoil such genius. Let me just say it is a fantatsicly realised plot, which is not only exciting, but will make you think about issues raised in the film (such as experimention, messing with nature etc).
It's obvious to see why this is regarded as the best manga film, it has the makings of a great film, fantastic plot, stunning animation, great effects, amamzing sound track, in fact, this is the only flawless film I have ever seen.
Through out the film, the quality of the animation is jaw dropping, it is fantasticly smooth, and if your used to things like scooby doo :) and other such uk animated things, the quality of akira will blow you away. The characters and backgrounds are fantastically drawn capturing the feel of the comic book amazingly. The film is also blessed with a fantastic soundtrack that reflects the feeling of the film very well, with drum beats, and harmonous voices. Beautiful. The only negative is the slightly pants voice overs, I'm sure the voice of canadea is one of the voice actors from the teenage mutant hero (we dont get ninja turtles in the uk!!!) turtles cartoon series!!!!! They are not to bad, but I would say that it's worth trying to get a subtitled version instead, just to hear the real voices. Oh and once again, this is a film worth hearing through your stereo, tv speakers can never convey the sound too well. Also if there is a dvd version get that, akira looks good on vhs, but would be FAR better suited for a dvd release.

Overall a fantastcially realised cyber punk action film, and an essential purchase for everyone.
